How many junkies will come back from Iraq/Afghanistan? |

While I'm pressed to find any current information or projections regarding narcotic use amongst the troops, I have read a few history books. The Brits had an appetite for the poppy plant, Russians too.
Are we creating a entirely new generation of homeless and/or addicted veterans? Anybody know what's going down, over there?

Drugs are not as wide spread in the MiddleEast. Possession often equals death.
Also, It is a different military culture now. We have learned some lessons from Vietnam. Also, you are drug tested when you return.

1. Afghanistan has always been, *the* place to get opiates. Production has greatly increased since the start of our occupation.
2. Currently, there is very little or no rule of law in either Afghanistan or Iraq. They certainly can't be doling out capital punishment for possession anymore, wouldn't you think?
3. The human impulse to numb oneself, or escape from physical and mental anguish cannot be quashed. The culture of the proper U.S. military can change, but primal instinct doesn't.
4. It is not all regular army there, there are quite a few National Guard. Everyday folks, like you and me.
