All I'm seeing is the media arguing the minority opinion re: Schaivo...
The media is keeping the Schaivo case going. The courts have handed down their decision, the Schindler family continues to be met with resistance, and the majority of Americans side with Michael Schaivo and the courts' decision to keep the government out of our personal lives; and yet, the media keeps arguing from the viewpoint of the minority.

I see newscasters underlining how "sad" the Schaivo case is, pushing the "I want to live" phony story, continuing to present the republican side, publishing pictures of protestors with red tape labelled "LIFE" over their mouths, and framing incidents in the Schindlers' terms....republican talking points, unpopular ones, being mouthed and broadcasted by the supposed "liberal" media. If the media was really liberal, this case would have been over a week ago.

In all respects, this situation is OVER. Yet the media keeps shoving it under our noses, as if, like in jury deliberation, we keep thinking about it and hearing about it, eventually our collective will be broken and the popular opinion will be reversed.

2. it's all about spectacle and sensationalism
There is no legit mainstream media any more.

Remember that movie NETWORK? That's what we have now... a bunch of bottom-feeders and the Howard Beals who unwittingly do their dirty work.

4. Exactly, the US News Media is not a true news anymore, just a
show. Hopefully, globalization in the news media will come around and people will have better access to European news.

7. Hey, it's the CON (Corporately Owned News)
These organizations push the Scaife and Olin agendas. This includes breaking the economic back of America, to make their wealth even more ancien regime. The ultimate goal is the return of the French ancien regime, with only the Third Estate (those making less than $200,000) paying taxes. Nobles (Busheviks, Scaifes, Olins, and Waltons) and clergy (Fallwell, Robertson, Dobson, etc.) won't be paying taxes (not that they do now, bastards).

11. I noticed CNN doing this as I was just waiting for soem news on this case
I normally don't watch those fucking ass-holes any more - and now I know why. They are playing this issue up as badly as the Republicans did - it's shameful hearing the charged language that they are repeating - and the awful pictures they choose to show given a choice of thousands of images. Very, very disgusting...

14. It's sickening....
The number of people who agree with the Schindlers is actually few, yet the media keeps seeing things through their eyes.

I know the media is owned by the GOP, but this is just nuts. Even the majority of the freekin' GOP doesn't agree with the Schindlers!

They just keep pushing and pushing.....they really think that if they just keep this issue in the spotlight, the majority will change their minds.

13. Art imitates life. Or in this case, preceeds it.
From chapter 1

... the Hate rose to a frenzy. People were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices in an effort to drown the maddening bleating voice that came from the screen. ...
In a lucid moment Winston found that he was shouting with the others and kicking his heel violently against the rung of his chair. The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but, on the contrary, that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge-hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one's will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp. Thus, at one moment Winston's hatred was not turned against Goldstein at all, but, on the contrary, against Big Brother, the Party, and the Thought Police; and at such moments his heart went out to the lonely, derided heretic on the screen, sole guardian of truth and sanity in a world of lies. And yet the very next instant he was at one with the people about him, and all that was said of Goldstein seemed to him to be true. At those moments his secret loathing of Big Brother changed into adoration, and Big Brother seemed to tower up, an invincible, fearless protector, standing like a rock against the hordes of Asia, and Goldstein, in spite of his isolation, his helplessness, and the doubt that hung about his very existence, seemed like some sinister enchanter, capable by the mere power of his voice of wrecking the structure of civilization...

17. What I don't get as per the parents
is that after enduring a 15 yr. vigilance, hoping Terri will recover despite doctors' prognoses that she won't, why would they put themselves through this emotional media circus, which has got to be worse, emotionally, than coping with the loss of a child who has been braindead for 15 years?

21. "All I'm seeing is the media arguing the minority opinion"
I was pointing this out to family members just the other day. Despite polls, despite medical opinion, despite judicial decisions (and avoidance of decisions), FOXCNNMSNBCCNBCABCCBSNBC is hyping the arch rightwing position.

This has been one of the uglier episodes of pandering and spectacle profiteering I've seen in, well, days (as it is standard operating procedure -- we see it all the time). Bring back the Fairness Doctrine! Bring back the Rule of Sevens! De-monopolize the major media! Give the people back their voice!

I've been dealing with end-of-life decisions and hospice for a very close family member these last 9 days. O what wonders to sit in the hospice lounge for a break only to see Tom Delay of Bill Frist or the cable news chattering class talking like the most important thing we need to do is save Terry Shiavo's life, as if Terry still dwelled in that dead neo-cortex. (Meanwhile each day another American soldier dies in an illegal, immoral war as a result of the lies of this same class of people.) I look around the room and see the guilt and indecision on everyone who also unfortunately has someone in hospice at this moment. There is no peace for the humane.

I've heard it said that we are in kali-yuga, the age of calamity death and destruction, the Hindu end-times. Planet earth is now a hospice for the whole of us.

May God have mercy on all our souls...

22. Thanks for your post, and my condolences.
It must be harder than hard to have to deal with your own personal tragedy while enduring this bloody circus on TV. I hope it gets better for you.

And if we EVER get another Dem back in the WH, reinstating the Fairness Doctrine ought to be the FIRST PRIORITY.

24. I have so much respect for people that work in the medical and
hospice fields. My experience has been that these are really caring, responsible people. I think it is just terrible that the media is making out the fanatics to look like the ones that care and making the truly caring people look cold and heartless. It seems so twisted and upside-down and wrong.

25. We spent a few days last week at Disneyworld
My son was watching CNN and said, Mom the anchor is talking about Terri Shiavo, the headlines beneath the anchor is about Terri Shiavo, and even the crawl is about her. He found a German news station and that was how we learned about the boy who did the shooting.

27. "All Terri, All The Time...."
And yet, we get headlines like "Schaivo's Parents Try Last Resort To Save Daughter" instead of "Rights Denied to Dying Woman," etc.

And, of course, the momentum from the Tom Delay hearings and the Social Security debacle is gone as we on the Dem side fight like children over semantics, rumor, and innuendo....Nice work, Karl!
