I'm involved in two religion threads at the moment. I can't bear another. Hence, the plea in my OP.

For heaven's sakes, I've spent the last two days battling with atheists. I'm beat.

Iºm finished with them. Your appeals for patience were obviously pointless. I canºt begin to tell you how pained I feel over the level of arrogance and intolerance I have encountered in these discussions. Because of your plea to take risks in the pursuit of understanding, I expressed deeply personal beliefs about my family religiosity and was meant with scorn and arrogance. I have learned my lesson the hard way. Now if youºll excuse me while I cry.

10. Your thread was a good one. |
|
It is, unfortunately, typical of the turn this place has taken lately that your thread would be locked while the hatefests are allowed to go on and on and on like the Energizer bunny.

Didn't work on the Schiavo threads. I don't think it's going to work on the cats and kittens here either.
Do what I did to the Schiavo threads. Hide button goooood.
Eh, I guess I'm desensitized. I subjected myself to a certain level of abuse on an atheist group once. I was their token theist :D
But I do still cringe at what borders sometimes on hate speech. At least don't play childish games with words like Gawd or such. It reminds me too much of the way my mother used to twist the names of people she didn't like, like Saddam Insane. Bugs the stuffins out of me, no matter who's doing it or who they're doing it to, from DemocRATS to Repukes.
The thing is, some atheists are recovering fundamentalists and very, very angry. I just wish we could break through their anger so that they might realize that we're not all like that. I'm just looking for civil debate. But then I don't always get that here on the best of days, what with being a John Kerry sychophant and all.

14. as to your last point |
|
about recovering fundamentalists: I posted something wondering if that wasn't the case, that some may have come from very strictly religious households and feel driven to challenge religious belief as a result. Part of why I thought this might be the case is because many seem obsessed with biblical scripture, pointing out this or that verse, that I, as a lapsed Catholic, am far less familiar with. They didn't like that and in fact took great offense at the suggestion.
I'm been their whipping girl lately, but then I brought it on myself by daring to enter the theology forum.
