Anyone know Comedian George Lopez's political leanings?
Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 06:21 PM by NNguyenMD
I think he's a funny guy, but one episode of that ABC sitcom he does dealing with affirmative action really pissed me off. His character got a job interview in a sweet position at some big company, but he rejected it after finding out that they were only interested in him just because of his skin color so that they could meet their affirmative action quota.

I can tell you in my experience seeing the medical school admissions process that THAT IS NOT how affirmative action is suppose to work. Affirmative action is NOT about skin color but giving qualified people from historically underrepresented backgrounds the chance to excell to places that were otherwise closed off to them decades ago.

2. Based on a lot of his standup...
He's definitely no big Bush fan.

3. Yes, but unfortunately, that is how it is perceived, if not
done. I am a proponent of Affirmative Action, of course, but all government projects have a smarmy way of being put in force.

Try to look at it this way: the character was demonstrating that nobody likes to be considered because of their race, sex, or other factors.

I was asked today to give preferential treatment to the daughter of a republican staffer for our congressman -- a Republican -- and I resent it. But how much more would SHE resent it, if she knew?

I work in a public University. I was not asked to give her grades; that would have created a firestorm. I was asked to show her an exceptional good time on an overseas trip. I plan to do this -- because we are going to France -- and I want the Republicans to understand that France is a good place.

But it still pisses me off.

4. He might be a repuke. I heard him a while back on the Sharon Osbourne
Show. He told a story about HW B*SH inviting him to the Whitehouse for a State dinner. He was seated next to the President of Mexico. The Mex Pres asked why George's family left Mexico for the US, because the part of Mexico George's family is from is quite beautiful. George's reply was it's only beautiful for the greedy politicians who steal from the poor. His family was starving to death so they went to America. George was promptly escorted out of the Whitehouse by the Secrete Service. Which could be interpreted as liberal, but I don't think a liberal would have been invited to the WH in the first place.

7. Bush41 probably invited him there

to fill a quota . . .

On edit:

I had read or heard something that some person (apparently trying to hide their glee) a while back had been invited to the White House for Bush43.

Their statement went something like "Well, when the POTUS invites you, you go." Like being invited to dine with Mussolini would have been an "honor".

Well, if invited to the WH with Bush43 in residence, I would have to "respectfully decline". Okay, it would be disrespectfully, but I would put down on paper "respectfully".

If they insisted (for whatever reason), I would then "DISRESPECTFULLY decline".

Any further "requests" would be "honored" in chains and at gunpoint.

But if it were Kerry, or any other of the candidates, I would be a Minuteman.

9. Really?
Not to lead the thread down another path, but I think I would go. Getting to be that close to the President (any president) is the chance of a lifetime. You might be able to get his ear. Not that it would make a difference with Bush, but I would like to tell him what I think of him!

8. Going to the White House
Does not make a Person a Repub. Bush probably invited him because he thought he was funny and we know how Bush loves those rags to riches stories. Also Im pretty sure David Stern the NBA commissioner has been to the WH and believe me hes not a Repub. as hes gives over 720,000 dollars to Democrats running for office

6. I think you misunderstood the point.
The point was that even though affirmative action was being used, the people hiring were still racist. They refused to see past his skin color. They outright insulted him. They basically told he that he wasn't good enough for the job, they only needed an object to fill in for the quota.
