Jesse Jackson shows the world the difference between neo-cons & liberals |
|
and I'm liking it a lot.
Here you've got passionate people from two different sides, the conservative religious right and now someone from the liberal religious left, both fighting for the same cause....to keep Terri Schiavo alive. However on one side, the Right, you've got a group of people presenting their views in hysterical, accusatory ways....making fools of themselves in front of the world. On the other, you've now got someone from the Left, Jesse Jackson, presenting his views toward the same goal, but in a logical, calm, cool, and well-mannered fashion.
My sympathies go out to Terri Schiavo's parents and her husband, Michael. Having said that, this is a win-win situation for liberals and how we're perceived as compared to the almost fanatically appearing religious right. I don't necessarily agree with Jesse's views on this issue, but I'm glad he's out there showing the world how much more reasonable and respectful our side is when it comes to issues of life, death, or just about ANYTHING.
Take Tom DeLay and Jesse Jackson. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which one comes off as being deranged and which one as reasonable.

1. He's still spouting lies designed to mislead people |
|
Just heard a clip of him on CNN radio. Saying Terri is being 'starved' to death and how cruel and inhumane it is. Jackson is just another publicity hog, ignoring the facts. I can't believe I actually voted for him in the 1988 primary.

2. His opinions on this don't really matter as much as |
|
how he comes off.
So far, compared to the fanatical religious right, he's a breath of fresh air. You and I might not agree with what he has to say, but as long as he remains cool and calm about the issue, it'll only serve to help the perception that many people have about liberals. All they have to do is compare, and this is one of those rare instances where you've got a well-known liberal fighting for the same cause of some far right neo-cons. It's all about perception.

3. Well I respect your opinion... |
|
But what it looks like to me is a left-winger who is just as willing to ignore the facts to incite an emotional response as the RW'ers are. If he was truly there to council the family as he said he was, he could have done that in private. Now it just gives the Right Wing cover to say "See it's not just conservatives." Now we have a prominent liberal playing politics with this issue too.

4. Thanks. The thing is I don't believe it really matters what his motives are |
|
It's all about how people perceive the differences between neo-cons and liberals, and in this light it's a win situation for us as long as Jackson remains civil and gentlemanly, as compared to the other side.

5. He Can Play Honest Broker |
|
For the sake of Michael Schiavo, I hope he's mediating a way to tone this circus down...giving all parties cover to stop the media frenzy and let the politicians run far, far away from this thing.
It also shows Democrats can cross a divide Repugnicans can't. This episode has fractured their "big tent" in many ways...letting an outsider mediate opens the door for a lot of suspicion and second-guessing down the road.
While I wish Jesse wouldn't have gotten involved, I suspect there's things behind the scenes we're not hearing about, yet.

He is calling for emergency legislation, calling for Bush to intervene to stop the starving. All he is doing is providing legitimacy for the RW'ers. He is willfully ignoring the facts of the case just like the fundies. In my opinion he is doing far more harm than good.

I heard just a few minutes before they switched to Bunnypants...and I thought I did hear what you mentioned...but, said, he has to know this isn't gonna happen and it won't change the dynamic of this situation.
My first reaction was Jesse was chasing the cameras again, but let's see how this plays out.
If I see him linking hands with Randall Terry or Gibbs or Friar Tuck or whomever, then I'll be singing a very different tune.

This is really pissing me off. If he wants to show up on some show and run his ignorant mouth, that's his perogative. But he's live in front of the hospice. He's just another shameful opportunist exploiting a dying woman. And to think there was a time when I wanted to see him run for president.

12. I don't agree with him either, but why should the Right have sole rights |
|
to issues of life and death, one way or another?
Sitting back and saying nothing could just as well be considered apathetic. If Jackson truly believes in his opinion, then why shouldn't he stand up for it in public?
As long as Jackson keeps his cool, the liberal left has all that much more respect to gain from this. Two different sides, the same goal on the same issue....but different approaches.
Let's see how it all plays out.

Nobody from our side needed to go do anything about this. The American people think this should be a private matter.
Now we have our left-wing publicity-hound Jesse Jackson down there and we can't use the fact that the right-wing wackos are using this case to attract publicity.
I wish he'd just go away. He doesn't help the left at all.

Jesse Jackson has been a tireless advocate for civil rights since he was one of Dr. King's young lieutenants in the civil rights movement some forty years ago...
He has earned the right to speak about whatever he damn well pleases and I have no doubt that if Dr. King were alive he would be standing there next to Jesse...

This is about a PRIVATE PERSONAL FAMILY MATTER. Not anybody else. Not you. Not me. Not the Schindlers or Jesse Jackson. According to the law her next of kin makes the decision. In this case HER HUSBAND!

And I question if these were Ms. Schiavo's wishes as revealed by her husband, brother in law and brother in law's life...
Yeah, yeah, yeah, this has been ajudicated and the court has decided this was her wishes...
Juries and judges render decisions everday and we are bound by law to accept them but we have the right to question them...
That's all some of us are doing...

18. Yeah, I know about the polls. The polls will hurt Jeb & Chimpy, and |
|
that's good, but it's also important that people outside of the Democratic community know how much our side differs from the radical right when it comes to issues like this.
With Jackson to compare the other side to...now that he's in the picture....we're coming off as so much more reasonable than they are. As long as he doesn't get too carried away in his passion, we should come out of this smelling like a rose, whether we agree with his opinion or not.
Liberals = voice of reason Neo-cons = delusion, outrage, & hostility

All the polls state that the voters don't like the involvement of political types in this intensely tragic family matter.
The best thing the left could have done was stand aside and let the ass clown r-wingers monopolize the spotlight of infamy.
Too bad Jackson is addicted to publicity.

Rushbo has no basis in fact for his statements but that never stopped him from putting bullshit out there.
Jackson's visit will take some of the air out of that windbag and others like him.
