Poll question: Whose Funeral Will Be Larger, More Elaborate? The Pope Or Ronald Reagan?
My Sister suggests that the Pope's Funeral will never be as large or elaborate as Reagan's. Hard to say. The Catholic Church spends money like the Republicans.

What do you think, Bigger Funeral?

1. We Catholics have more bling.
You don't maintain a 2000 year old institution without knowing how to pull off a good funeral.

...

BTW: (Off topic) Your site keeps getting better.

2. We know how to 'do death'.
Reagan's funeral will pale, in comparison.

3. But I'll bet
the Church won't fly his body to two coasts for an all-celebrity spectacular!!!

4. Regan got 10 days of festivities, I'm hearing the Pope has to
be buried within 6 days, although the mourning period takes another 9 days.

Anyway, the mourning period is just a chance for all the wanna-be Popes to work their political machines. Whomever gets stuck with the duty of doing all the extra masses will be out of the loop on sucking up to the new boss.

5. Reagan's funeral will pale by comparison
If Catholicism knows how do do nothing else, it knows how to do a Pope's funeral.

Heck, nine days of mourning are built into the ritual, and that's just the beginning!

There was no Conclave to elect Reagan's successor, either.

6. I have watched popes buried since Pius XII.
The rites have been pretty consistently the same from what I remember.
Maybe you should investigate the past 60 years and you will get a glimpse of the future.

7. "LET THE EAGLE SOAR!"
Ashcroft could cross denominations and sing at the Vatican!

8. Doubt it
They don't go in for tacky music much at the Vatican. Bach and Mahler among others composed Masses. Ashcroft wouldn't be considered.

9. The Lopsided vote surprises me
Maybe I was too young the last time power changed hands at the Vatican but I just couldn't believe the extent of the Regan thing. I heard, I think, that the book that specified the plans (approved in advance by Ronnie and Nancy) was over 2000 pages long.

Says so on their website. He was a humble man. He wouldn't want a fuss. Doesn't seem like the big line of mourners filing past the casket is nearly as likely.

Looking forward to the big chicken drop though. Reminds me of that old episode of WKRP where they learn that domesticated turkeys do not fly...

12. Forget it Bonzo, His Holiness got you beat.
We're talking major pomp and circumsance here, magnificent costumes, lighting and a stage set designed by guys named Michelangelo, Bernini, Bramante and Raphael.

The Catholics have been doing this for over 1000 years.

14. I'd say the pope- hand's down
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims or faithful will turn up. Also the mass will be insane. Ronald Reagans funeral was big for the U.S. & other world leaders. The Pope is big for almost the entire world

15. let's don't give the vatican's wealth to any poor people - spend it on
a funeral instead to dazzle the planet's desperately poor downtrodden masses so they will give their last pennies to the filthy rich church.
