Republican recruiting stations |
|
I'm typesetting a book, and I found this fun paragraph. You may enjoy it...
According to Lefler and Newsome writing in NORTH CAROLINA, The History of a Southern State: “The Temperance forces before 1900 eliminated the legal sale of liquor from many of the towns through local option elections; hundreds of rural communities became “dry” by obtaining acts of incorporation from the General Assembly. The Democratic-dominated legislature, sensing the popularity of the issue and responsive to the urging of the newly organized North Carolina Anti-Saloon League, enacted the Watts Act in 1903. This law prohibited the manufacture and sale of spirituous liquors, except in incorporated towns, and was calculated “to get rid of the county distilleries,” which some called “Republican recruiting stations.”
