Suicide Bomber Blows Himself Up in Second Attack in Three Days Near Abu Ghraib Prison

By Antonio Castaneda Associated Press Writer
Published: Apr 4, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A suicide bomber driving a tractor blew himself up Monday in the second attack in three days near the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

An attack on the prison Saturday killed one militant and wounded 44 American troops, 13 prisoners and about 50 insurgents, the U.S. military said.

In a separate attack also on Saturday, an American soldier was killed and another was injured after coming under fire in the northern city of Tal Afar, the U.S. military said Monday. The injured soldier was taken to a combat hospital for treatment.

As of Saturday, at least 1,533 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

1. as Rummy sez: "War is messy"
Good thing Iraq is a "Mission Accomplished" and that it's reconstruction is going so well, and is totally funded by Iraqi oil! And I'm sure that our soldiers are only being injured by the thorns of the roses the grateful people are throwing.

But seriously - why report this stuff? After all - I have better things to waste my Beautiful Mind on, Like Michael Jacksons trial!

16. actually I believe he has used both terms....
from BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/1694513.stm

Mr Rumsfeld vowed to "get" the leaders of the Taleban and al-Qaeda, while admitting the campaign was a "complicated, long, difficult, messy, dirty job".

and shortly into the war - from CNN:
"Freedom's untidy, and free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things," Rumsfeld said. "They're also free to live their lives and do wonderful things. And that's what's going to happen here."

Looting, he added, was not uncommon for countries that experience significant social upheaval. "Stuff happens," Rumsfeld said.

Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, agreed. "This is a transition period between war and what we hope will be a much more peaceful time," Myers said.

As CNN aired scenes of frantic mobs hauling off or smashing anything not nailed down, Rumsfeld, on the other side of a split screen, testily implied that the chaos was to be expected. "Stuff happens," he huffed, explaining that "free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things." After all, he noted, national transitions are generally accompanied by "untidiness." And the situation in Iraq, Rumsfeld added, is "untidy. And freedom's untidy."

3. Gee you'd almost think that they didn't like their new "freedom."
This is going to go on and on and on. Will the American public ever say, "Enough, dammit?"

I hope so. :scared:

6. I thought this place was shut down and destroyed
Am I the only one who heard this plan trumpeted on the news for a week after the Abu Ghraib scandal? Am I just hallucinating?

Is this one of those things like when Chalabi was busted for spying for Iran, then somehow miraculously became our friend again in Iraqi politics when the news media "forgot" to remind us about that?

The Abu Ghraib torture chamber needs to go 'bye-bye.' Halliburton will just get another no-bid contract to build another prison, but at least a symbol of the Bush terror regime will be destroyed. :bounce:

Cheers,
Lori Price

19. Very odd info
First, I bet this guy was supposed to be a suicide bomber in the first attack, and missed the start for some reason, and now felt guilty he was still alive so went in by himself to get blowed up good.

I can maybe, possibly, see that we could have 44 wounded and none dead because our guys are behind walls when the truck bombs went off, but no way I can believe that only one dead militant goes along with 50 wounded.

If this battle lasted an hour, I'm assuming their were helicopters ripping into the insurgents from the rear, and helicopters don't wound that many.

Also, didn't the insurgents admit to seven suicide bombers the first night? That would be at least seven dead.

Odd info.
