More thoughts on my Republican boss: Last night I watched a silent film |
|
called The Wind with Lillian Gish. It takes place in the badlands of Texas where a wind is so strong it drives people crazy. There is a drought and cattle are dying. These were really hard times these folks were going through. One of the characters ( a scruffy coach driver)is seen taking food from another man. It's supposed to be a bit of comic relief in the film, but it made me think about how when people are hungry and desperate, they may resort to stealing or competing for food because they have no other choice. I thought: What would make me do that? and even though I am struggling mentally not to lose my mind over my financial situation, I am never hungry and I do not have to take from others to eat. But my Republican boss, who owns 2 homes in Raleigh NC, a beach house and an apartment in Manhattan, a sailboat, a Harley Davidson, Jaguar convertible, and an SUV is worth about 2 million (after the divorce) refuses to pay his share of employment taxes (I am his office manager and work as an "independent contractor") also, I receive no benefits at all. I do an excellent job for him, yet he seems like the man in the movie. What? Is he desperate for food and therefore has to give me only enough to survive on the margin as a single 42 yr old with nothing but a paycheck? Last year, taxes wiped out my savings. This year, I will have to finance them through the IRS at a rate of 100 bucks a month for 3 YEARS! He won't write me a check for $2750 because he is a stingy bastard! Yet, he is not the man in the movie who was desperate. He's filthy rich! But still BEHAVES like the man in the movie. What am I to make of this? What do you make of it?
:grr:  Sorry this is so long, but I'm going crazy!

1. It's greed pure and simple |
|
He has the "I've got mine" attitude.
Perhaps you should look for employment elsewhere?

Hence the question mark. You sound like you are just plain fed up.
It's amazing at the greed of people who have all that they could ever want but still want more. I will never understand those type of people.
I wish you lots of luck. Keep us posted on your search. Let us know if you find something better. :)

I have all this money because I worked hard to earn it. You didn't work as hard so you don't deserve any of it.
Your boss is sick in the head.

|
he wants us to take pay cuts, to be more competitive. We compete with union companies, we use union sub-contractors, go figure?

6. Can you afford to go to the media with this? |
|
Local news stations would do a bangup job with this; so might good investigative reporters. There might be backlash for you, though.
Before you do that, I'd go to him and ask if you could change your employment status, though. Explain that the lack of benefits is a difficulty. If he refuses, you'll have a stronger case.

8. I could not afford to lose my job and I most certainly would. I have asked |
|
him to help me this year because I have no extra money to pay the double employment taxes and he hasn't given me and answer. I am trying desperately to find another job, but missing work for interviews involves lies and a loss of money for me. I just can't figure out how to get him to see he is screwing me royal.

Why do you continue to work for this cretin? Do you really feel you couldn't find work elsewhere?
I would report his ass to the IRS and collect the finder's fee. You are NOT an independent contractor. By not paying his employment taxes he becomes liable for your share as well and, I believe, a certain percentage to cover your federal withholding. You should NOT have to deplete your hard-earned savings. You are screwing yourself. Meanwhile, he walks around thinking he is above the law and so clever for beating the system. What a freakin' bastard.
How many flags does he have plastered all over his SUV?

go to the IRS over this guy. He's only going to get worse. Get out while you can. Then go to the local media to showcase what a despicable irresponsible Christian American he REALLY is. Even if you have to flip burgers at a couple of jobs until you can get on your feet, you'll at least know you've done the right thing. Continuing to go along with his scheme is really enabling and hurting everyone. People like these must be called out!

10. HA! Your thoughts are about where I am with it. I'm thinking about |
|
reporting him to the IRS but I need every penny I make here and am worried about how I would live while I looked for another job. My savings are gone thanks to him. I may report him after I find another job, if I do.

12. Toots, you need a lawyer. |
|
You can show proof via your duties that you're not an IC, and the IRS will go after HIM for the lack of withholding. The DOL will get your o0vertime pay (you ain't exempt, either, as an "office manager". As it is, you pay double ssi and have no unemployment coverage.
Start looking for another job, then gig him.

18. These are the people Bush protects |
|
He calls them "small businesses." Wouldn't want to hurt small businesses by forcing them to provide benefits.
Bush uses the term small business like it's describing some grandma selling jam out of her garage. Thing is many small business owners are very wealthy and could easily afford paying benefits.
And "independent contractors" are used as a way to get around the system. Don't have to pay benefits to them either. I'm with everyone else. Turn the bastard into thi IRS. He deserves it.

20. In the meantime, a little R&R may help -- |
|
There's talk in the NC forum about a DU meet-up at (probably) Mellow Mushroom, on Peace St., for the 9th. Haven't settled the location, for sure, or the time yet, but it might do you some good to talk to like-minded folk in a congenial atmosphere.
Take a look at the poll in the States/North Carolina forum, and consider it. Might help you feel you're not out there battling on your own.
