NOGALES, Ariz., April 3 (Reuters) - A civilian militia in Arizona seeking to stop illegal aliens coming in from Mexico claimed its first immigrant when a hapless Guatemalan wandered into the group's base camp seeking help.

A spokesman for the controversial Minuteman Project, which has rallied hundreds of volunteers to join a month-long vigil on the border, said on Sunday a Guatemalan migrant unwittingly walked into the camp.

The volunteers then handed him to the Border Patrol.

"But it turned out to be his lucky day," he added. "He was tired and dehydrated and we gave him medical attention, food and drink before handing him over to the Border Patrol."

There are lots of unanswered questions. From the article:"Andy Adame, public information officer for the Border Patrol, confirmed that 118 apprehensions resulted from 54 calls received since Thursday.

Adame said he had no way of telling whether Minuteman Project volunteers made the calls, however."

I'm sure that these people, even though they're covering only twenty miles of the border right now, are having some sort of impact. But I think that this whole scenario is wrong. It reeks of vigilantism, lynch mobs and racial paranoia. You've got five hundred pumped up freepers, the Mexican army mobilized across the border, the Border Patrol nervous, and the illegals caught in between. Not a good combination, especially when the firepower is thrown into the mix.

Look, illegal immigrants are a serious problem in this country, but if you really want to put a stop to it, you've got to take away the incentive. Thus, you have to crack down on the corporations and the ruling elites who hire illegals, and make them hurt. Otherwise the flow of illegals is just going to divert itself somewhere else, and continue to swarm into this country.

people wouldn't be trying to do it. I don't like the idea of militias or vigilantes or whatever you want to call them. I don't like the idea of large numbers of illegal aliens in the country either. I don't like the fact that corporate America has sold out our own workers to exploit the labor of others.

Fact still remains, that if the government does not do its job in policing the borders and the corporations, it provides empowerment to such groups.

I guess I'm not "progressive" enough to wish to surrender my country to illegal Third World immigrants. Illegal immigration depresses wages, it strains government budgets at all levels, and I'd even suggest that it has been instrumental in importing diseases such as tuberculosis. Let me clarify my position on this issue: I am in favor of the immediate deportation of any and all illegal immigrants caught either entering the country or currently working inside our borders. I am also in favor of levying heavy fines on any and all employers of illegal immigrants; I don't care if it's Wal Mart or a local subcontractor. I would assess the penalty at 5% of the company's net worth. Illegal immigration should be addressed now.

Hell, I could go on that forum, claim to be a KKK member in the Minuteman group, and spout all kinds of racist crap about getting ready to shoot Mexicans. It wouldn't change the fact that I am currently sitting in Minnesota drinking Pepsi with my Hispanic girlfriend. Other than words on an anonymous forum, what evidence do we have that actual, on-the-border Minutemen volunteers are KKK or white supremicist members? I find it quite a stretch to say that since some racists posted on the Minuteman forum, all Minutemen volunteers are in the KKK. What hard evidence do we have?

Besides, so far no one has reported any ill treatment of illegal immigrants by Minuteman volunteers that I have heard of. No one has been beaten, or shot, or run over with pick-ups. All I've heard is that they've done exactly what they said they would: watch the border with binoculars and report any suspicious people they see to the Border Patrol. I have my doubts that hardcore racists like the KKK would be so easy-going.
