RE: FYI Gannon/Guckert.......I smell a story cooking.
This was posted a week ago:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3383213&mesg_id=3383213

and today we have this report on the front page of the
Desmoines Register:

'Bizarre' Gosch theory: Internet reports speculate that blogger Jeff Gannon (left) is really Johnny Gosch, who disappeared from his W.D.M. home in 1982.
Fiction or fact?

Was this the story that was developing last week?

3. No doubt!
They are essentially reporting on the DU Gannon Wrinkles thread... Of course with their spin, but I think it still might make people wonder?

2. Why do people think this? Do their ages match up?
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 09:22 AM by BlueEyedSon
Is this an attempt to DISCREDIT bloggers?

4. This might get ugly for DU if the story goes any further.

This is quite a snarky piece.

snips

The Gannon-Gosch conspiracy theory first appeared on the message board of a liberal political site called The Democratic Underground on Feb. 26. A site regular, using the name TwoSparkles, speculated that Jeff Gannon was victimized by a government-organized child pornography ring.

Then he foreshadowed the future with this note: "I found this picture of Johnny Gosch. I looked at it and almost thought it looked like Gannon! It must be getting late." The image was a school picture of Gosch taken in the 1980s and later enhanced.

The same poster noted that Gannon/Guckert and Gosch had the same initials. Before long, other site members were trying to figure out whether the ages matched. (In fact, there would be more than 10 years' age difference between Gannon and Gosch.)

edit: spelling

12. Sounds like the right is working up a "Rather" on DU
But who knows? It could be a freelancer with an axe to grind, or it could be an orchestrated effort. Has DU been maligned lately in other publications or media outlets?

The best attacks do not involve piling on. If you want to take someone down, a good way to do that is to plant stories here, there and everywhere, over a long period of time. And if the entity you are aiming at is not the primary focus of the piece, but takes a swipe in passing, that's better still--anyone researching the entity via our friend GOOGLE would find a number of minor reports and mentions, all disparaging, going back over a long period of time. Then, you work up a big punch, and that entity is permanently marginalized...because, see, they were never "credible" in the first place. It's an old tactic, updated for the internet. It's a lot like a virtual "nuts and sluts" charge that politicians have put on people who are whistleblowers or who have embarrassed the government in some fashion.

The bright side is that if they are creating intrigue against a particular entity, that means they are afraid of said entity.

6. Or an attempt to minimize questions re:Guckert/Gannon
It really seems like a Rovian ploy-discredit a peripheral aspect of the story (Gosch-Guckert) to remove scrutiny from other, valid, questions re: Guckert/Gannon. There was a flurry of interest on the DU boards re: Gosch, but the ages were shown not to match up within a few days. The Gosch story is a red herring and there are still many unanswered questions about Guckert/Gannon and his WH access.

7. yes, go with the extreme of not matching age to kidnapped boy
will minimize the reminder of poppy in 91

will dismiss du

and will show the absurdity or to demiss the real story

8. Of all the aspects of the Gannon/Guckert fiasco,
the J Gosch story is the FURTHEST afield and the least likely to be true!

Why not look at the very real questions presented by the Gannon impersonation?

13. Why do people insist on taking the Gannon story and ...
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 09:46 AM by Sentinel Chicken
turning it into a crazy, paranoid, idiotic conspiracy. It only distracts from the real story.

Jim Gurket is a lazy, immoral, fraud, that would/has sold himself body and soul. He is accepted by his peers in the national press club. He was riding the same gravy train that most of them are on and his ticket was bought and paid for by the Bush's. Isn't that damning enough?

14. No, this isn't the story.
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 09:47 AM by Skinner
There was no story. And this article isn't exactly "a big main stream daily paper OUTSIDE of the beltway (writing) about Gannon/Guckert in a big way." It's an article discrediting the story.
