I finally saw a Mammie statue in GA
It was in a bar-b-que/juke joint owned by a black family. It was a cookie jar and was sitting right up there next to oil portraits of old jazz and disco-era singers.

It is quite an eclectic place and has the best ribs. I've been in there many times before but this is the first time the Mammie cookie jar registered. I have a few threads on this board to thank for drawing it to my attention.

1. A rather common, if collectible piece. Not a statue per se, but as you
said, a cookie jar.

2. yes, I am aware of that, but
some threads that have been on this board in the past could lead one to believe they are found only in the homes of racist white families and business owners.

6. A Poster Did A Thread About
why he hates the South and he mentioned the myriad of mammy dolls he had seen as a reason...

I have lived in FL since I was a boy in 1970 and have never seen one... I do think I saw a black lawn jockey once or twice...

In fact someone gave my dad one but he was going to throw it away... I painted it white first....

8. I saw that thread
and he never mentioned anything about "Hating" the south. He said that racism in the south is blatent and that a lot of southern democrats defend the status quo there, which the thread proved correct.

9. I have to disagree with the assertion that that thread proved anything
except that some people are willing to make judgements based on limited information.

7. It's in Athens, GA - where the Univ. of GA is
I WAS NOT there for football, but was there because of football!

But now I'm making myself very, very hungry for ribs and all I have is a bowl of oatmeal with flax seed in it!

12. I've seen that kind of thing in the north
I went into some white peoples' house once in the Detroit area (downriver, of course). It was filled with stuff like that-the old signs with pickinannies, Amos and Andy-style objects, etc. They referred to their collection as "coon art", when I asked them what the deal was, and they assured me that 1. they weren't racists (uh-huh) and 2. the stuff was worth lots of money.

I like it when people paint the faces on lawn jockeys white. It's funny.
