The Economic Machinery Stops……
Edited on Sat Apr-09-05 07:47 PM by The Whiskey Priest
The lights go out, the machines stop running, money is worthless (as Bush has already told us it was last week) what then? What comes next?

Let's brain storm; what does the world look like the day after. A large portion of the American populace will be on the streets….the grocery stores will be empty….transportation will cease….even the internet will go black…what happens?

For a short while, the politicos will continue to meet…but, they will not govern…what happens? Civil authority will cease functioning, because they cannot pay for the services, stop lights will go blank, even if some cars operated, the water will cease running, sewers will stop carrying waste, the garbage will pile up, the jails will empty, and small business will shut the doors and shutter the windows, what will happen?

What chaos will ensue in the large cities, what chaos will ensue in the small villages…no government, what will happen? Hospitals will close, physicians will pack up and go home, and pharmacies will shut their doors, what will happen?

This is what the Republicans and their followers have been working towards. What do they have in mind for the day after?

2. the day after
The next day, you will look for work, but it will be for less $$ and benefits. The next day, you will shop for food, but will have to pay more. The next day, you will live an existence which will more and more resemble life in other countries which traditionally have not been so blessed. It will become an old story soon.

3. Meanwhile, life in Amish communities goes like as if nothing happened.
It's important to be able to feed yourself, and to have skills that can be bartered locally for goods and services. Web design gurus and investment bankers better learn carpentry or blacksmithing.

It's that, or face a very angry mob of millions.

5. While I think enid602 is a little too optimistic, I think NEOBuckeye is a
little severe. I am spending pretty much 24-7 trying to get my house ready to sell and find a new one that I can pay for just about outright. Nonetheless, I live in a college town, teach at the college, but not in a tenure-track position and when the student population drops my job will too. I am single, so I don't have a back-up source of support. Perhaps I can get a job babysitting or walking pets when the sh*t hits the fan...

6. I'd declare the start of a libertarian socialist people's revolution
I'd begin to encourage people to band together and cooperate for mutual survival, and I, and hopefully others along the way, will try to encourage that all people have a say in the big decisions that affect us all. I'm a fan of man. I think people given the information necessary to make decisions will make competent decisions, not ones based on ignorance and fear.

7. Zinc Air Fuel Cells could help, but infrastructure isn't there yet...

other companies are eVionyx, Arotech.

Some have mentioned 'pebble bed' nuclear reactors, methane hydrates, but we are going to have to rely on government for the 'mega-projects'. We can do solar, conservation, wind, biodiesel, etc. etc. and set up smaller scale local economies (see the E F Schumacher Society's local currency projects).

9. Rapture
and by the time the religiously insane realize it ain't happening, the few who have all the wealth will simply await the end of the anarchical slaughter and the plagues. They will then reimpose a feudal society.

I don't think that's gonna happen though. I foresee a kind of corporate feudalism.
