Why we fight - BBC Program on US militarism, Real Player format

Why We Fight

What are the forces that shape and propel American militarism? This award-winning film provides an inside look at the anatomy of the American war machine.

Is American foreign policy dominated by the idea of military supremacy? Has the military become too important in American life?

Broadcast on 03/23/05 BBC

When you click on the link if you've got Real Player installed it will start to download and play automatically. There's also a link on the page to download a free copy of Real Player. I've got a DSL connection, so I can't vouch for how well it will work on dial up.

7. Thanks for posting that link MeDeMax.

As dossiers go, it looks somewhat more informative than that other famous dossier cribed from a student term paper Tony the pet Poodle was waving in everyone's face to heighten the Saddam is gonna nuke us hysteria.

2. Holy shit, McCain says Ike was right re military/industrial complex
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 03:01 PM by JohnyCanuck
I've been watching the video and they just showed a snip of an interview with John McCain in which he said Ike's warning/prediction about the military inustrial complex has come true.

Well, Mr. McCain, why don't you make a statement like that when you're on the US news shows with the assorted peckerhead media whores? Looks to me like you have the guts to handle years stuck in a North Vietnamese prison as a POW, but you don't have the guts to explain to your fellow citizens that their goverment has been corrupted and has been hijacked by economically powerful coporations and the defense industry. What's up with that?

3. This is a superb documentary
Well worth watching. I'd put it on a par with The Power of Nightmares in some respects, it's just as compelling and damning.

5. What I found striking

was the testimony of the NYC cop who lost his son in the WTC on 9/11 and contacted the military to have his son's name put on a bomb to be dropped on Iraq. He was under the assumption that Iraq was responsible for 911 and when Bush came out and was forced to make a public statement admitting that there was no connection between Iraq and the 9/11 attack, he suddently came to the shocking (to him) realization that he had been used and his president had lied to him. He was from the old school (as he phrased it) and apparently like many Americans operated under the assumption that the word of the President of the United State should never be doubted on something as significant as the need to go to war.

6. Reminded me of Lila Lipscomb on F9/11
Yeah, a good man, I felt so sorry for him. To lose a son he obviously adored in such harrowing circumstances was bad enough, but the pain of his realisation that he'd been lied to and his son's death exploited was palpable.

I remember laughing out loud at some other contributions, some demented people out there, like the boss of some corp. who build cruise missiles and shit saying their aim was to provide "solutions" to their customers or some such hideous corp. speak. Scary mentalities on display.

8. That was long, but it was more than worth watching.
Wow . . . just wow. I knew most of what they discussed before, but seeing it put together like that just blew my mind. I'm going to reminisce on the sad state of our country and then go to bed.
