Franken is EATING on the air.
Can you believe this shit?

"How does this sound?" he says to his producer. "Okay,
you're making me hungry," says the little suck up.

Off button, listen to a Malloy archived show. Jeez.

5. Yeah. Ribs. In Tennessee or something.
You remember he had that rib joint bit early on?
I think it's one of those places.

Did I forget to mention how disgusting I find those
smacking/gulping sounds to be?

:gaack:

25. Okay, a food segment is a bit different, but...
One should never actually taste food on mic!!! Hit your kill switch and then talk about it after you swallow. Let your partner patter while you chew.

they are in Memphis doing a segment about local food (ribs I think).

It's not like he just got the munchies and decided to grab a bag of chips.

have all of those noises? They were all over the
place -- biting, chewing, swallowing.

I don't know why it drives me nuts too, but it just
drives me nuts.

8. Have you seen "Left of the Dial" on HBO?
I recently watched it and, well, it seems that they should have considered spending some money on professional radio people ... at least as instructors to all of the people like Franken who had never done Radio. Still, he's been at it w awhile now. You'd think he'd know better.

26. Sure. There are three denominations of Judaism: Orthodox, Conservative and
Reform.

http://www.urbanimpactny.org/judaism.htm

Categories And Denominations
Judaism is usually classified in three denominations: Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform. Orthodox Judaism, however, falls into two broad categories: Modern Orthodox and Hasidim. The Modern Orthodox are usually more academic, while the Hasidim are more mystical. One of the more “high profile” Groups within Hasidism is the Lubavitch (also called Habad). Hasidic men usually wear black or dark gray suits and always wear skullcaps (in Hebrew, kippah: in Yiddish, yarmulke). Orthodox Jews insist on traditional Judaism, with few accommodations to modernity.

Reform Judaism (not “Reformed” Judaism), on the other hand, has embraced modernity, liberalism, and humanism in an effort to enhance a sense of relevance. Although there is a variety of beliefs within Reform Judaism, it generally maintains a more inclusive position regarding feminism, homosexuality, and agnosticism.

Conservative Judaism “fills the gap” between Orthodox Judaism and Reform Judaism. This is the largest denomination within American Jewry, and it is important to point out that “Conservative” applies to their approach to religion and should not be seen as a political label. Their desire is to make allowances for modern culture, while “conserving”, as far as possible, traditional Judaism. Again, there are a variety of perspectives within Conservative Judaism. Some conservative synagogues are closer to Orthodox Judaism, while others are closer to Reform Judaism. There are other, smaller groups within Judaism, but these are the principal ones.

36. There is no "excommunication" in Judaism.
There is no holy ground or holy people. Following the rules is up to the conscience of the believer. There are practical limits to this. Just as in any polite society. You can't break every rule and still hang out.

He would send someone with a remote to a rib joint and talk directly to the patrons.

It was only a freakin' gag.

28. He's either Reform or Conservative (not politically, but as a Jewish
category). Franken's certainly not an Orthodox Jew, since he's married outside of the religion.

See my post #26 for explanations of the three Jewish sects.

that he's Reform. So he can, indeed, eat pork and other non-kosher things.

Anyone who has a beef (no pun intended) with Al's interviewing should piss off and listen to the guest he has on right now. I'm glued to the radio listening to the story about MLK's last hours right now. This is radio at its finest!

What ribs?

Edit: "Piss off" in the biblical sense. :dilemma:

33. "Eating is the most political thing that you do."
I heard that quote recently, in the context of the food that you buy makes a political statement every day. Whether you eat meat or not, which grocery stores/brands you support, etc.

So you could say Franken's behavior is ironically appropriate.

Figures that such a crass act was performed by a meat-eating meat eater. ;)
