For Something Different—A Thought-provoking Quote
Edited on Wed Apr-13-05 10:23 PM by The Whiskey Priest
Following the civil war the Republicans were hesitating on paying loans that were incurred during the war. Ulysses S. Grant campaigned on quickly repay the loans. To emphasis that commitment Grant said during his March 1869 Inaugural address:

“To protect the national honor, every dollar of the Government indebtedness should be should be paid in gold… Let it be understood that no repudiator of one farthing of our public debt will be trusted in public places.”

Guess the Bushter disproved that A** Wipe.

1. Did Grant really pay the country's debts in gold????
Or only liquid gold? In Illinois (and maybe elsewhere) Grant is known as a drunkard of legendary proportions.

But, who is buried in Grant's Tomb? Age-old question....

And a :bounce:

2. propaganda

Grant was a drunk during the time he was stationed in Oregon. The allegations made of that during the Civil War are exaggerations (the Yazoo River story) and outright lies (the Petersburg campaign) largely spread by generals Grant fired- McClernand and W.F. Smith- and journalists Grant barred.

Southern revisionists took control of writing the public history of the Civil War. The culturally Southern parts of the country- which ranged into southern Ohio and southern Illinois are full of people convinced of this and other alternatives version of history created after that War. The amazing valor and gallantry and chivalry of Southern troops and generals, the idea it was all about 'states' rights', that it was a war of aggression and desire to destroy the South for economic reasons, etc. Furthermore the tyranny of Abe Lincoln, Grant as a drunkard, Sherman as rapist, arsonist, and hater, and so on.
