Area 51 appears on google maps
So tonight I spied on Area 51. Actually, maybe I should explain a little more, before I lead with such a tempting sentence. If you go to CNN’s website tonight, you will see a story about google’s new map search service. Basically, the company has integrated satellite technology into their map-searching site, and now you can get ACTUAL photographs beamed directly from somewhere in space. This section of the page just launched a day or two ago, and already many people are upset because they feel, for some reason, having satellite mapping software on the web that gives basic users the ability to stare at the roof of someone else’s house is an invasions of privacy (Sheesh, what prudes.)

Anyway, with my interest peaked, I decided to check out the controversial technology. Upon going to http://maps.google.com, I immediately COULD NOT find the link to this so-called satellite mapping. Little did I know, however, that google had cleverly hid it in plain view on the upper right hand side of the page. It had been disguised under the link name “satellite,” which I understand is actually a German word meaning “I want to look into your house now.”

By Clicking on the clever “satellite” link, the normal Google U.S. graphic map that usually decorates the main searching page suddenly disappeared, only to be replaced seconds later by a REAL LIFE image of the U.S. For a few minutes I think I sat in awe, and probably drooled a little bit. Then, as boredom was about to set in, I decided to fiddle with the program. I searched for silly things at first: my home town, pizza places, Bush’s integrity…you know, things that you’d think should be easy to find via satellite, but sometimes turn out to be next to impossible to locate. And then I got the bright idea to bring up an image of Las Vegas.

After a few seconds of searching aimlessly through imaged suburbs on the outskirts of Vegas, the realization finally dawned on me…maybe Area 51 could be located with this thing…At first I didn’t really know how to go about searching. I tried to scroll up the map a bit, hoping to accidentally stumble upon the military’s worst best kept secret, but it was too no avail…who knew Nevada was full of deserts and mountains???

1. What riot! You can get arrested for aiming a camera at Area 51...
... but you want to Google a satellite view? No problem!

51. So why all the secrecy
Sure, they've got the aliens stashed there, but surely you can't get pictures of them from the ground or from the satellites. ;)

2. He like there are no photos of the Groom lake base on the internet...
Here is a photo of a U2 taking off from Beale AFB (zoom in).

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=yuba+city+ca&ll=39.126585,-121.433591&spn=0.007660,0.010353&t=k&hl=en

If the DOD didn't want this to be seen it wouldn't be on the net, they track these satellites and know what they are taking photos of, they can classify an image if they want to.

This forum of legitimate military aviation enthusiasts has tons of links to good sat-photos

The US government wasn't too happy about it, but it's out there now. Shows runways, hangars, barracks, etc.

Again, these photos have been up for years, the DOD doesnt care about photos like this. I just saw a discovery channel report a few weeks ago where they filemd inside Cheyenne Mountain and that is just as secret as Nellis AFB.

I remember one weekend last month on the Sci-Fi channel possibly or something like that they were talking about Area 51 and if it was real etc. This guy and three/four others were trying to just figure out about Area 51 and the main guy who's been working on this for a few years and either the CIA or FBI (can't remember who) came into the guy's home and took all his computer discs and the computer all together, photos etc. So they're really trying to hide something. Oh and trying to find Bush's
integrity you might have to look a little bit out in space. It's not here on Earth that's for sure.

6. What do you think of Bob Lazar's story? He claimed to work there.
I think there is some truth in it and that he's been fucked with/discredited for some reason as a result.

I do remain cautious, yet I believe he worked at Area 51.

8. Bob lazar made one big mistake in assuming it was retro-engineering
of an "alien" or futuristic craft those guys were working on.

I also think he was deliberately used by the Pentagon in a counter-intelligence smear op.

38. It is convenient to hide the development of exotic propulsion and energy
systems like anti-gravity, I think Bob Lazar was involved in some kind of research there and got targeted for something. I don't buy the alien hypothesis, that's a black op cover for something radical.

56. There was a story way back 20 years ago that Area 51 was the
scene of a major bio-weapons disaster, some man-made smallpox hybrid mutated onto a flu virus carrier .....

And that Ronnie Raygun ordered the gagging after the place was sealed off and a whitewash black op put in place.

Can't remember the exact details but believe it was several hundred military fatalities, whose deaths had to be explained away to relatives who then had to sign secrecy agreements....

47. Don't you think
those people always say the fancy aircraft are "reverse engineered alien aircraft" because that's the only way they can talk about secret aircraft programmes without getting in trouble? Noone's going to take them seriously anyway unless they "read between the lines" (...and of course the aircraft was retro-engineered from aliens wink wink).

If memory serves, he was talking about how the UFOs were powered by Element 115, which is expected to be a relatively stable element (the neighboring elements in the periodic table are all artificial and have extremely short half-lives). I knew immediately he was a con artist.

10. Try Nasa's World Wind and see it in 3D
It uses satellite images like Google, but also allows you to interactively fly over any spot on the planet in 3D. You can even see the height of the mountains. Probably the coolest application I've seen in years.

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

Just type Groom Lake into the place finder and you're there. Not only can you see Area 51, you can see exactly how it fits into the terrrain by moving the camera to whatever height and angle you want.

17. The Google Sat Pics are already censored
Zoom in on the White house, for example, and the roof of the White House, the Treasury Building, and the OEOB are masked with a brown screen (kinda like having been Photoshopped). And that's perfectly fine with me. In fact, I see it as a good thing. I **want** our government and government buildings kept safe (no flames regarding the current *state* of our government ... I agree with all of you!).

Also, the Google sat pix, as I understand it, are not live. They're stored photos, and having looked at some areas I know intimately well (like my own house) are not all that recent. I looked at a nearby street where there's a relatively long term road job going on (bridge replacement) and it shows the old bridge, untouched.

Through one of the photo links (I can't rememeber which one) it let you know when the photo was taken. The recent ones of seattle were about 3 years old. The ones of my parents place are even older. When they're able to do this with live imagery, that will fall into the both cool and scary file...

...Only because when I flew into New Mexico I saw them. They just fields of whatever. They don't have much water out there so they set up these HUGE (Look to be a mile square/round) watering things. They just spin around and water the entire field.

At least that's what I assume they are.

43. Those green circles appear all over the west
Wherever there is agriculture in the west, you're likely to see them. When you fly cross country you see lots of them from the airplane. They're kind of like a chain of pipes connected together, and with a wheel periodically along the chain. There's an anchor point at the center (and a water source too) and the whole pipe-wheel chain rotates around the center anchor to water the round area.

32. Funny story from an AF friend of mine
A friend of mine is in the Air Force and he was TDY at Groom AFB (I assume). He was telling me that he was assigned to Area 51 (not sure that's what they officially call it in the AF, but that's what he called it when he told me the story becuase he knew I knew about the rumors etc.)

He said everyone in the AF talks about the rumors too, it's a big joke in many ways since nobody (or very few people) really know what goes on deep inside the bunkers or caves or whatever is super super top secret.

Anwyay, so he arrives at Area 51 for his TDY and at while introducing himself to the officers and others there at his briefing, the first question he asks is:

"so, where the aliens? Got any UFOs to show me?"

Nobody laughed he said...which was kind of strange. I think it's hilarious.
