If everyone abstained from buying gas for 2 days, would the prices plummet |
|
I may have heard this somewhere before, but nevertheless, I'm curious to find out what would happen if everyone who drives a car would not purchase gas for a day or two.

2. Nope, because you'd just buy it later |
|
Changing driving habits overall is helpful, but pushing back your purchase by a day or two doesn't hurt anyone. Check out www.snopes.com and search gas boycott for more info.

12. snopes says to buy less gasoline instead of abstaining completely. |
|
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/gasout.htmThe only practical way of reducing gasoline prices is through the straightforward means of buying less gasoline, not through a simple and painless scheme of just shifting where we buy it. The inconvenience of driving less is a hardship too many people apparently aren't willing to endure, however.

5. Gas is not the same as ripe tomatoes |
|
If you were the station owner with 250,000 gallons of gas in your tanks and you didn't have any customers for two days, would you be dumb enough to unload your inventory in a panic?
The gas will still be good in two days. If you had 5 semi's of tomatoes out back rotting, and you knew that in 2 days they would be worthless, that's another story.

1. gasoline is not the only use of oil.
2. the predictable demand to refill cars would supress any short term price change.
Only changes in technology, laws, taxes, and behavior can change the demand for oil, IMO.

25. No, the last time I checked it wasn't pixie dust, |
|
although that is a very nice picture.:7
But 53 of us passengers took up the space of about two cars on the freeway instead of 53 cars. And for the fuel of probably 3-4 cars (2 SUVs), 53 of us got to work on time, in spite of the rude dogs on their cell phones while others were trying sleep. Not perfect, but better than one-occupant vehicles.

28. Okay, going slightly off topic, but... |

A few years ago while watching a public access show touting the wonders of hemp as a fuel it occurred to me that if society would actually devote the resources to making hemp a realistic energy alternative... you might still be stuck in traffic behind a bus, breathing bus fumes... but maybe it just wouldn't seem so bad. :smoke:

|
I love that idea. Betcha the oil companies would really scream over that one. The cotton farmers already have.
However (oh, God, if I tell you this, I will have to make the admission I actually went into a Wal-Mart--okay, here goes), I was in Wal-Mart (oh, that hurt) BECAUSE THERE IS NO COSTCO WITHIN 25 MILES OF MY HOUSE AND THE WHOLE FOODS IS 40 MILES AWAY, and guess what? Hemp oil hand lotion. No shit. And, yes, I bought some to support the hemp industry (try the hemp chapstick and soap--the best).

13. No. Others have more or less covered it. |
|
You *will* buy gas within a few days--and the same amount. If you don't buy gas in two days, you'll buy it on the third. In fact, if such a boycott existed and they knew about it, the most likely course of action would be a hike on the third day.
From snopes: "Gasoline is a fungible, global commodity, its price subject to the ordinary forces of supply and demand. No amount of consumer gimmickry and showmanship will lower its price in the long run; only a significant, continuous reduction in demand will accomplish that goal. Unfortunately, for many people achieving that goal would mean cutting down on their driving or opting for less desirable economy cars over less fuel-efficient models, solutions they find unappealing. "

I do 22-25 miles round trip per day 5 days a week. I already posted my resume on monster.
I also did something I never ever thought I would do and that is sign up with an mlm (health product) that does all sales online and is becoming profitable for us. It may not support us fully, but it is extra money and a business write-off for mileage, office supplies, product purchase, etc.

The problem is to much demand and the only way to reduce demand on a short-term basis is to drive less.

purchasing anything shipped by gas (almost everything.... then maybe yes it would affect the price. But just skipping a day of filling up and driving on fumes only to fill up the next day....? No effect at all.
