37. Dodd: To get done properly. Suggest calling Bolton back |
|
before committee. Will be gone on recess. We can reset the date to explore all of these issues. If decision to bring him back, this is a reasonable request to check allegations. We should vote on these matters.
Lugar: THe chair is trying to entertain a motion but at end of the trail motion would need some certainty the committee would meet to have a vote. I'm hopeful that is the understanding we have that members are willing to vote on this nominee. I think we owe the nominee and the pres that consideration.
Kerry: when and under what circumstances? We can take a vote. Better to move by consensus. Move to call Bolton if needed and staff can pursue allegations. Once explored we're willing to vote.
Lugar: how much more investigation?
Dodd: I'm talking about that week we get back. we're leaving it up to you.
Biden: You set the date when we get back and investigation done by joint staff, majority and minority and it'll become self-evident whether he needs to come back. We could make a motion. That comes to majority vote. If we have exhausted this, and the conflicting allegations, we want to hear Botlon's POV.
Dodd: Concern about running out the clock. We urge you to ask State to be cooperative.
Biden: State could provide, staffers are cleared to go down an dlook and it gets put to bed immediately. I'm problably still going to vote against him. It wasn't until your (lugar) letter on Thurs that got STate dept to respond to requests we had in for over a month. If we do it jointly....
Lugar: ASk ranking member fi he would agree on dates of completion of various phases...
Biden: Answer is yes. Let's assume some outrageous charge...the certainty of dates...I'm prepared to agree on that right now and prepared to say any day you suggest when we come back from that recess I commit to it.
Boxer: Make sure state dept cooperates.
Lugar: Have a proviso. I hpe members within reason take State and CIA as professionals.
Biden: State dept denying us access to intercepts, they have not been reasonable.
Lugar: Ask unanimous consent for a date after April recess for final business meeting that we'll try our best to attend, work diligently, examine witnesses and offer add'l information, from State and CIA to be coooperative, understand the gravity, and return to have continuation of this meeting and be prepared to vote.
Kerry: that includes possibility of Sec'y Bolton returning.
Lugar: yes, he might be asked.
Biden: or be able to ask him written questions in lieu of that.

44. So Biden agreed to vote on a date to be determined after the April break |
|
Should more come up about that slimeball Bolton, there's nothing forcing the Dems from postponing the vote again if they need to. The repubs are obviously trying to fasttrack him to keep more from coming out. Now the Dems have 2 weeks to get more evidence to add to the mountain that's already been uncovered.
When was the last time something good like this happened??

|
Anybody else think maybe V did this to bail out Chafee on an extremely unpopular vote? V just won reelection, right? He can take a little asswhuppin from the WH...Chafee can't afford to get the WH looking for a (PA 04 vs Specter) Toomey-like primary opponent, but also can't afford to look like WH lackey voting for such an asinine nominee. V steps in, takes the hit, maybe WH feels too much heat on this and pulls Bolton nomination in the meantime, Chafee off the hook. Just thinkin maybe a little backscratching going on?

82. Might surprise you to learn I'm from the Cleveland area, |
|
and Voinovich was a regular customer of mine in a certain dept. at Higbee's downtown where I had my first job some years before I moved on to LA/NY.
I also have a cousin married to one of the top tier at the Plain Dealer.

I have heard some whacko rumors over the years about him. In any case, I am glad you have some reasonable inside knowledge here. Senator Brown anyone.

At that time, I was very athletic and had a build similar to a slender male, narrow hips, well-developed muscles. I even turned the heads of a number of bi/gay men. (Traxx...heheh)

86. Here's another twist on your "crazy" idea |
|
When I heard that Hagel was expressing doubts as well as Chafee, I concluded that Bolton was almost definitely going down. It seems unlikely that Hagel would be publicly expressing doubts at this point if he wasn't leaning strongly that way. Well, maybe Rove reached the same conclusion and decided to let Chafee off the hook with his constituents in order to keep a Pug seat.
Those additional hearings where Kerry and the other Dems plan to confront Bolton with his lies to the committee--I don't think they'll ever happen. The nomination will be withdrawn.

88. Could be - although I'd like to think 1 or 2 of them have a conscience |
|
it's doubtful that that's the case. It's more likely to be some kind of political thing like you mentioned. Chafee was EXTREMELY quiet, and V kind of came out of nowhere to say what he said. Chafee seems to be in a very vulnerable position right now.
Really the only repukes who spoke out in defense of Bolton, besides Lugar, were Coleman and Allen, both of whom make me physically ill. Lugar I find myself feeling sorry for, although I'm not exactly sure why. I sometimes wonder exactly what type of pressure bushco puts on these people - it must be really scary. He just looked like an old, terrified man.
I was proud of all the dems today. I hope they keep it up!

60. Did you see JOHN KERRY salivating over the prospects of |
|
having Bolton come back to testify? Kerry is ready to make mincemeat out of Bolton for LYING to the committee! Bolton purjured himself by the lies he told the committe, and Kerry is ready to POUNCE! The Dems are going to use this time during the postponement to make one helluva case!
:woohoo::applause::bounce: GO KERRY!!! :kick::woohoo::applause:

I hope they take Bolton down. Kerry needs to finish this guy off. He's a bully and a sleaze and doesn't deserve this position. He deserves prison stripes!
Dang it! We need a prisoner smilie!
:bounce: for Kerry and our Dems!

Excellent!!! Keep it up!!
And thanks everyone for keeping us cube-rats in the know.
Another reason Lugar was trying to fastrack Bolton through is the cabal needs to keep their time-line on attacking Iran -- Bolton to strongarm the UN.

|
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 05:09 PM by Daphne08
our democracy is all about, and I'm very proud of it.
Today transcends politics. It goes to the very heart of our republic!
It's the reason we have DO have "Checks and Balances" and the reason that they should always be protected. I really do believe this afternoon will go down in the history books.
And yes, I'm very proud of the firm stand our Democrats took on this!
As Senator Kerry stated, these Committee hearings and meetings are about debate and about providing a record-- and today could have set a dangerous precedent for the future. ...and another thing. I LOVE my country! I was just telling my husband about all this on the phone, and I'm not embarrassed to say it. I love my country. :patriot:

I love my country. When our government works, it's the most beautiful thing in the world. THIS is how it's supposed to work - checks and balances!
I love my country. I'm proud of my Democratic leaders today.
