Smoking gun found at sponsorship inquiry |
|
MONTREAL -- Documents at the sponsorship inquiry show Finance Department officials approved a contract change that gave 75-thousand dollars to Claude Boulay. Memos from 1996 when Paul Martin was finance minister show officials approved additional funding for a Canada Savings Bond direct mail campaign. The change resulted in a 75-thousand-dollar commission for Boulay, head of Montreal ad firm Groupe Everest. That's because Everest was paid a 17.56 per cent commission for the campaign, even though most of the work was done by another agency. It wasn't clear whether Martin knew about the funding increase, or the fact that the expanded deal put money in Boulay's pocket. Boulay, who wrapped up his testimony at the inquiry in Montreal today, had worked on Martin's 1990 leadership bid as well as his 1988 and 1993 election campaigns. Martin has repeatedly denied allegations he interfered in advertising contracts to Everest's benefit. (CP)

4. How is that a smoking gun? |
|
Everything said so far has been refuted...and this even states they have no idea if Martin knew about it.

Face it Maple - he did it they're corrupt. I hate the Cons too, but I'm not going to defend criminals because I agree with their politics.

7. So far it's 'he said/she said' stuff |
|
And what a few people, already charged, did in Quebec years ago is neither here nor there in the greater scheme of things political.
People said the same things about the Cons under Mulroney.

9. I don't see it as a smoking gun, yet |
|
as it relates directly to Martin. It specifies the Finance Department not Martin himself. If they want to nail Martin they are going to have to come up with his signature on something or a witness that can conclusively tie Martin himself to those contracts.
I get the feeling the inquiry has some devastating documents yet to come though, not necessarily specific to Martin but something that will give the faux cons some real meat.
An aside, is anyone other than me actually watching the inquiry?

and cheering at every statement, because they see it as a stepping-stone to government
I'm not. I've seen tons of 'scandals' over the years, by all parties, that are long since forgotten.

The prime minister says he takes responsibility for the sponsorship scandal, and is taking action to make sure abuse of tax money doesn't happen again. Martin made the apology tonight in an extraordinary address to the nation. (BN)

12. nothing gets in the news unless the fascasti want something.... |

obviously, canada's impertinence in electing govs that aren't outright busheviks has really pissed the nazipoos off....too bad! martin should tell the people the very fact canada's united and the separatists are a rump party means all the 'squandered' sponsorship money was well spent.... btw, the news media is the most corrupt, sneaky double dealing part of the national system....bar none. Notice, though canada is overwhelmingly liberal, no truly liberal media is allowed (beyond local college radio etc)...the toronto star, supposedly a 'liberal' media, says bush did well invading iraq.....the rest of them outright worship the guy!
