I'm not attacking you because I know that it is used all the time on DU (and everywhere else), but I think that it oversimplifies and attempts to make a subjective opinion appear to be an objective fact.

The word evil gives the impression that somebody is doing bad things for the purpose of doing bad things. Like a villain in a comic book or a James Bond movie - they have no real reason to want to destroy the world, other than that they are "evil" and that is what evil people do. In the real world, however, everybody has a rationale for what they do.

Hitler, Osama, Bush - all these people- think that they are doing good for the world. We may see these people as being divorced from reality, but they still were motivated by a belief (delusional as it may be) that they were doing good. It was this belief that they were doing good which motivated their actions - they did not just wake up one day and say, "I want to make the world a much worse place."

The reason that Bush says Osama is evil is because that characterization paints him as a 1 dimensional cartoonish character who had no rationalization for his actions. In Osama's mind he was right to blow up the WTC (please no MIHOP discussions), because he judged it to be an appropriate response to U.S. aggression. Even though I vehemently disagree with him, I don't pretend that he acted as he did because he is "evil" by nature.

So, I think when DU uses the words like "good" and "evil", we are using moral absolutes - these lead to not being introspective, and generally being less thoughtful IMO.

I have seen people suggest that Bush "wants to destroy America" on DU. This type of talk is the result of using morally absolute terms like "evil" used to describe him. I do not know of one world that had the goal of destroying the country which he was the leader of; the only way it would be possible for him to "want to destroy America" is if he felt that the destruction of America would be to the benefit of someone, or maybe some other nation which he has allegiance to. Since neither of these options seems particularly likely, I have no doubt that he wants to make America (what he perceives to be) a better place.

Okay, I'll shut up now... it is just always something which has bothered me that I needed to get off my chest. Really, this was not intended as an attack; just something I feel strongly about.

This is a woman who says women should not have the right to vote, who has advocated violence against AMERICANS who happen to be liberal on numerous occasions, who believes in policies even MORE totalitarian and murderous to the poor than the ones already being pursued by the gangsters still in office.

She is aware that the political agenda she promotes will KILL innocent people, both here and abroad. To me, the fact that she doesn't care in the least is the very definition of EVIL.

As for Bush wanting to destroy America, that is a bit of a distortion. He wants to return America to the way it was during the Gilded Age. Problem is that ultra-right-wingers like Bush don't realize that doing so WILL destroy America.

I believe that there are only Damaged human beings, not Evil ones.

However, the actions they take in their misguided attempt to "do good for the world", as you put it, can and should be described as evil.

Consider this passage from Tim LaHaye's Dominionist novel Glorious Appearing:

"Jesus merely raised one hand a few inches and a yawning chasm opened in the earth, stretching far and wide enough to swallow all of them. They tumbled in, howling and screeching, but their wailing was soon quashed and all was silent when the earth closed itself again."

Countless fundies believe and desire this scene to be played out, actively, and with great hope and expectation. While a more "evil" scenario is hard for me to imagine, I cannot claim that the proponents of such a thing are in fact "evil", because in so doing I become like them. I can question, however, what conditions may have been present throughout the lives of these people to cause them to earnestly believe such things. As an activist, then, I should try to address these conditions, and hopefully defray such thinking in the future.

And you've got to wonder what caused such corruption. Something traumatic, that's for sure. Probably involving a liberal also. Either that, or her response to the reality of the world intruding onto her insulated life simply drove her further into isolation. Who knows.
