Thank You Skinner & DUer's !!! |
|
I want to thank Skinner and all the great DUer's who donated money to help me get into a doctor for my stomache problems.
I got into a doctor wednesday, she thinks I have something called (GERD) Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. I also have high blood pressure (170 over 100) which is pretty high. They put me on some drug called Protonix, 25 mg. And two different kinds of high blood pressure drugs. Something called Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg, and Toprol 50 mg.
They also took blood and urine so they can run some lab tests. They also think I might have an ulcer or diabetes, they wont know until the lab tests are done. I will find out the results of that next wednesday.
I am supposed to take the Protonix for a week and go back for a 2nd office visit. I still feel like shit, I just hope this crap works.
Hopefully by then I will be feeling better and I can get back to a somewhat normal life. The doctor thinks I can recover pretty well from the drug treatments, I sure hope so.

3. I was diagnosed with GERD last fall |
|
It hurts like hell! I take a stomach coating medicine five times a day (morning, before each meal & bed) and it has helped a great deal. The three things that really helped me the most:
1) Quit smoking 2) Gave up all dark sodas & caffeine 3) Drastically reduced fat intake
A few months ago I could look at fatty foods and feel like crap -- now I can actually eat some of them again (without killing myself in the process).
Best wishes and just take it easy on yourself. :)

4. thanks for fighting the good fight, and I can tell you from experience |
|
protonix is the shit. You'll feel much better when you take it.
I'll donate to your site just as soon as I pay off my 2005 tax bill.
FWIW, I figured out that I'm paying more of my income in federal taxes than someone who makes 25 million bucks.
where's my tax cut you fucking liar bush?!?!?!?!?!?
goodboy.

5. The protonix will take a couple of days to kick in |
|
but if the doc's correct, the difference will be astounding. The good news is that, while Protonix is a better drug, a cheaper proton pump inhibitor is available OTC: Prilosec.
The other drugs are dedicated to bringing your blood pressure down, although it may have been that high because you were in pain (mine spikes that high when I get back spasms). The drugs you prescribed are fairly benign. If finances are a big issue, ask whether or not you might be switched to a cheaper beta blocker. The Toprol is still under patent, I think.
One thing you'll have to be concerned about is replacing the potassium that the thiazide will flush out of your system. Grapes, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, and raisins are all good food sources.
Good luck, and I'm glad you got an easily treatable diagnosis.

6. I hope you feel better soon, but I don't like taking drugs for that... |

(GERD) type of problem. That's basically an Acid stomach, probably brought on by too much stress. Your stomach produced too much acid, and when it was regurgitated up, it burned the upper part of you esophagus. The problem with antacids and acid inhibiting drugs is that they work at cross purposes to what your stomach naturally does, produce acid.
Try to relax more, follow what you Doctor told you, but I would add a simple, natural remedy, that you can get at most Health Food stores.
Aloe Vera Juice, I'm sure most have seen the healing qualities of Aloe Vera.
Now, most are very bitter, but one brand, which is more filtered than the others, is almost completely tasteless. It looks and taste like water, but it still works the same as the bitter stuff. The brand name is "George's." I always have some in my refrigerator for when my stomach acts up.
It might seem expensive (a Gallon is about $16.00, it does come in smaller bottles too), but it's worth it for the non-bitter taste alone.:hippie:

7. I've suffered with GERD for over 20 years. |
|
Three things I want to recommend are: 1. Prilosec (one or two a day) 2. Lactose enzymes (take one a day even if your not drinking milk) 3. DanActive (at least 3 times a week or more)
For a long time I tried to get by with antacids and other Anti-Acid medications but they just didn't get the job done.
