5. where does this custom originate, I wonder?

I was thinking that it could have several ancient reasons for being. Like, if U R holding the hand of the person you are doing business with, you can't walk away, turn your back, etc.

I'll bet though, with experience, you can tell when the other person is lying. I'll bet subconsciously they might twitch or sweat or give off other tiny clues without it being under their direct control. I'll bet the prince read the shrubs real intentions pretty well.

The shrub probablly couldn't think of anything other than "oh my God he's holding my hand. I wonder if he's going to kiss me?"
