Question for campaign junkies, is it to late for Bush to be primaried? |
|
Are Republicans stuck with Bush at this stage in the election or can one come up and challange the nomination. Do you think it will happen?

1. Technically, I don't think it's too late |
|
But I seriously doubt it will happen.

A hypothesis:
GWB doesn't really need 200 - 300 million right now to run against a democrat in the general election. Sure, he would like it and could do more work to overcome his negatives with it.
My theory is that he is raising this money as fast as possible now to "drain the pond" thus preventing any challenge from within his own party.
If all the big donors have comitted to GWB, who will finance an opponent? What hope would an opponent have facing this size of a war chest?

Bush is a given. They can't nominate anyone else. Otherwise everything they have said he stands for from day one is wrong. Bush is the one and only for the Republicans, even if they have to hold their noses, LOL!!!
If another Republican decides to challenge Bush, I'll faint. They are so lock-step it's sickening. Yeah, we're hearing a few murmurs, but they all know to go against Bush, they might as well say they are a Democrat. It'll be that devastating. Cheney maybe, but it wouldn't ever be on a day a Democratic presidential candidate came forward, like some were hinting about Wesley Clark. That's like admitting that there's something hugely wrong with your message. It'll be next spring. He might even have a minor heart attack to make the message softer. Then he can lie and say I'm stepping down because of my health.

6. Until he has the nomination he is technically able to be challenged. |
|
But, for my part, I want the satisfaction of seeing him crawl back to Crawford or Kennebunkport or wherever the fuck he ooched his way out from.

8. Something big would have to go down. |
|
If it were big enough to defeat him, it would be big enough for Poppy, Uncle Dick, Mrs. Hughes, Kenny Boy, and Rev. Graham to tell him time's up.
"Gotcha" WMD/Iraq lies wouldn't do it. A return to drinking wouldn't do it, so long as he acted contrite and did a week of rehab.
A sex scandal would probably bring on a primary challenge from a senior conservative (they all are, but I'm thinking well to the right of McCain) republican in congress. I don't think it's in the works, though, since it seems this guy gets off on war. A smoking gun memo about some major personal corruption (much more than the real but hazy-to-report-on scandals that are already known) might force his hand.
But if he's in, he wins. The GOP has nothing else to go on except for "patriotism", messiah-worship, and celebrating the terrorist attacks.
