Is this an attempted diversion for a larger story about to break?
The Bolton appointment by Bush makes no sense. Is there a bigger story about to break that we don't know about yet, but the Bush White House is aware of, and this appointment is made to counter the explosive effect of the story coming down the road? Soon....

9. I don't think so.
This whole business isn't driven by what you see on the surface. Bushco has become fair game to the press for the first time since 1999 or before, and will continue to be. Once the carapace is cracked, there's no going back. If there is an apparent lull, it's because there are no big new developments. As soon as there's something new, the story will be back. But don't expect them to print speculative things very much. Even a wounded adder can still strike.

Look below the surface. We are in the deep waters now.

21. I'll ask this question again, can Bushco pre-emptively strike Iran
without approval from Congress? When they gave him approval to strike Iraq, did that approval encompass the entire world?

that's a good question. I don't know if he needs the approval of congress, but did we change our policy in regards to pre-emptive strike. I'd find Walt Starr here, at DU, if I were you. He is really smart about this kind of stuff.

26. martial law and/or state of emergency
All they need to do is have Cheney "borrow" a nuke from Halliburton to set off during their upcoming "nuclear terrorism exercise(s)."

4. I doubt it. It's just his "my way or the highway" attitude!
Sure, there are lots of stories that could be about to break. Fitz could indite some people, Judge could rule against the Pentagon and demand they release the Photos, etc.

In this case, I really do think it's just showing Shrub to be the arrogant AH he is.

It's just another very clear "who cares what you think" move by Bush.

8. What bothers me
is how quickly Bush* acted on this...Most congressmen aren't even home yet for the recess and he hurries on Monday Morning to announce the appointment. That haste is troubling.

So I suspect that there's something we haven't heard about yet that he's trying to deflect.

13. No, there's just some kind of dealings- blackmail or whatever- going
on behind the scenes.

This is a truly stupid appointment. The guy's going to get a maximum of eight months in the office. He's going to just be finished moving in when he starts packing up again. The people he supervises aren't even going to take him seriously.

19. Planet Booosh Trying To Make News
More rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. I don't think this is as much an attempt at a diversion, but a vain attempt to molify the wingnuts and right wingers who are getting restless. This will give them something to strut about and heap praise on meester booosh and ignore all the rest of the corruption and hypocrisies they now live in.
