Camp rumor in Crawford: Arrests will be made at midnight. |
|
This according to William Pitt's blog from Camp Casey: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/printer_B081005.shtmlIt's ONLY rumor at this point, of course, but stay tuned . . .

to a van of Political Switchboard members en route to Crawford a short time ago said she feared those at Camp Casey will be arrested at midnight. They (van) suggested she go to peace house and wait for them (two are lawyers) but she said she feels she must be at the camp with the others.

|
They should retire to peace House, and let the cops cool their heels out on the road.. Noting's gonna happen out there tonite anyway.. That way they could all get a good night's rest before tomorrow.. At daybreak they cvould then head back, with press in tow.. It's not a private road,. is it??

I don't understand what charges could be brought against Cindy and the other protesters?
If they are on public property, and they aren't breaking any laws or being unruly---what specific charges can they be arrested for?
They're not doing anything unlawful!

No notification they were abducted is required, those who witnessed can all be put under gag orders, and if they die no notice to relatives/etc. is required and the bodies can also be secretly disposed of.

|
Is it true that no family ever need be notified of the detention or sbsequent execution of a loved one?
If that is the case, then the existence of such a heinous power is beyond outrageous in our Democracy.
It means that any unsolved missing persons case since the inception of this law could have been, or at any time be perpetrated by our own government. (Not that they never have done such a thing... but now it's a law?)

Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 12:25 AM by Dr_eldritch
you are quite the entertaining and thoughtful mix of introspection and pessimism...
Sometimes even more so than myself. ;)
For the time being, (what with my innate cynicism and all), I will harbor no judgment on whether such a provision exists.
But you have certainly piqued my curiosity.
As you certainly spend more time posting than I, I would be thrilled if you would PM me with any info you might come across with regard to this matter. I will, of course, keep my eyes open as well and send along any info directly should you wish.
If this does exist in part or in whole and in such a way that it can be construed to grant such abusive powers, then we would certainly have a formidable and damning piece of information to add to the massive litany of corruption this administration has already compiled.
Cheers.

20. I'm still skeptical that they will be arrested... |
|
I'm not sure that Bush will truly be willing to do that, number one, and number two, I'm not sure that the local police will comply if no law is being broken. It is somewhat difficult to make a real case that she isn't breaking a law now, and suddenly at midnight tonight she will be? That's a pretty sketchy case to make. Now, if the police are corrupt, or simply see it as their duty to follow the president's orders unquestioned and the president and his advisors are stupid enough to actually make such an order, then we might see an arrest. Otherwise, I'm not sure that it will actually happen. I mean, actually arresting her would turn her into a powerful symbol for them to contend with. If they have any sense, they would never create such a thing. But, sense does seem to be beyond these people, nor do I trust the Texas police force, so its in the cards, but certainly not a definite. Let's just say that I will be pleasantly surprised, should an arrest occur.

people are stil on their way and planning to arrive tomorrow, and finding the group in jail would only incite more emotion and attention. Then it would be Bush that wouldn't meet with the mother of a slain vet but also threw her in jail.

Much better, if it comes to a massive display of support, that it be in NY or DC. Get national coverage where you stand a decent chance of "reasonable" treatment. (IF that's possible!)

sure, you could gather 10,000 people in Central Park to sing protest songs and hold up signs, but it wouldn't get a flicker of attention in the media ... a smaller but more sincere and passionate group protesting just outside of where the president is "vacationing" though is a much more unique and compelling story, especially when it begins to cause problems in logistics for Bush and his cronies

They are stepping on dangerous ground here. Midnight raids arresting peacefully protesting dissenters. Limbaugh, Hannity and O'Reilly are going to be jumping for joy.

poorly on the police and all those involved all the way up to the top if something happened to Cindy and the others.
If thugs attacked them, people would immediately think they were sent by someone in the administration.

out there today and I asked her "What happens at midnight" and it was the fact that it was Thursday. There was no other reason. As I said on another thread, it didn't and doesn't make sense to me that the cops would arrest them in the dead of night-if they went by and shines a spotlight it was probably more to check up on them. Only one of the cops out there today was a big asshole.

Midnight has come and all is quiet. It looks like it was a camp rumor after all, and besides, it would be a political disaster.
Going to stick around a while anyway. Not sure what that cop with the lights was trying to do. A Secret Service SUV went by a moment ago. It is totally dark and the land is flat, so no one can sneak up on the camp.
I will report back when I know more. Meanwhile, the singing goes on.

Their plans totally depend on that! Crawford isn't a very big town, and if they're depending on the Craford cops to arrest everyone, well...they can't handle a lot of people!
Besides, has anyone even checked to see what the Crawford jail looks like? I'm thinking Mayberry RFD!

You're right, if they wanted to ShrubCo could send in whatever forces they felt necessary to get done what they wanted, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Short of an ariel helicopter strike, noone has seen any movement. Someone would have seen lots of people moving in!

Cindy has emerged, wrapped in a poncho, and the camp mood just lifted twenty feet off the ground.
The debate happening now is what to do if they try to move people. Cindy says, standing next to me here, that she won't leave unless she is carried out. Everyone else says, "That's all I need to hear."

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall - think of it, always."..... Gandhi

asked how Will was getting internet to update his blog.
Most likely he is using a cell phone and laptop. Its slow, but it works. Broadband Wirless is not going to be in the middle of nowhere like that.
The other option -- more expensive and used by MSM vans etc -- is satellite internet. It is possible (I guess) that someone has a DirectPC feed -- which could broadcast a very ugly video in realtime. Better solutions exist, but they are more expensive.
Some RV's and the like have broadband satellite internet as part of their setup, but I'm just guess for now.

Is a program used for remote login, but both computers already have to have internet access. It won't work in this case. I use it all the time to login to my work computer from home -- but both places have broadband.
Blackberry's are only useful if there is an antenna for it. In many rural areas, they are lucky to have cell. I can't say definately that he couldn't use one, but generally they are only useful in high density areas.

Now, it's only about the hot story.
Geez.
I USED to miss being a reporter. Something tells me I got out of the profession at the right time.

It is close to one in the morning here, and the threat appears to have passed. Anyone who has been on edge over this should understand the tension. These folks are on the edge of things out here, and the cops plus the flat bed tow truck made for ominous feelings.
Good news: Cindy will be on the cover of People Magazine. Time and Vanity Fair will interview her tomorrow. How many millions of readers do those magazines have?
Lots of millions.
To repeat, we are standing down for the time being.

If they arrest folks before any coverage is shown on the networks or cable news channels, seems to me the whole story will just die off. Have any shows covered this ? I know 360 was supposed to...

I've been screaming the same thing for 2 days. That is why it was so important to have ppl there with cameras/documentation.If she can make it through the next 24 without being arrested it is ON. Lots of ppl coming down to join her then and the MSM won't be able to black it out by then.

Do we know how many people are there now? The whole situation is very exciting.
Cheers, Drew
