Unless we take them literally. And that will always be the problem. These people are emotionally geared, without any kind of logic function in their brains. A large portion of them are illiterate or at least unable to think in the same terms as better educated people. That is not said to denigrate them--it is simply pointing out that some people are not eager to learn more, and have no patience for it at all.
Many of them have accepted their lot in life, and are resigned to it. They face a reality that many of us will never see, and they can not equate education with a better way to live. Many of them have been kicked down or pushed down, and most of them prefer to live as martyrs without too much complaining. They view the martyrdom of Jesus Christ as a very personal story, and a very real one. They can not take metaphor or allusion as the literary tools that they are. Instead that kind of literary device goes right over their heads.
They have been put into a position where they can not question the propaganda they have been fed, because they aren't able to distinguish facts from fairytales. They think, "it's on Fox TV, so it has to be true." Critical thinking is not something they're familiar with.
Some of these people might actually be good people. They've been suckered into a system with which they have never dealt before and are incapable of changing their choices. It won't be until the truth reaches them at some other level that they will realize that they have been completely snookered, and then they will not admit it, because their pride will keep them from that admission.

I hate to go on and make you blush further.....but that statement explains why they are so taken in by the yellow ribbons, the heart-tugging Toby Keith songs...the Republicans have really pegged that aspect of their constituency. They know that their following is incurious and that their "talking points" will reach them and mesmerize them. Deprogramming them is a very tall order.

102. While some might criticize our electoral college |
|
I think in some cases it is a better decision than letting many of the undereducated and incurious folk in our country vote without understanding the process or knowing the candidates better.
It appears that the general manipulation of the populace is working. These people have had over a half century to learn all the tricks and techniques to use mind control that the Nazis and other nasties used. And it's gotten to the point where 1/2 of the people in this country are so blase about the day to day crises we're going through, and don't even have enough curiosity to ask questions.
I have a difficult time myself nowadays seeing the apathy that is out there right now. I see teenagers and young adults out there only giving in to their own immediate desires and not having any kind of future goals for themselves. Obviously it's not every one, but there are enough out there to make that kind of lifestyle seem more attractive. I've heard teenagers in inner cities say how being a drug dealer will give them more money in a short while than they could earn in a lifetime at an honest job. I've seen even the best of kids tempted to follow that route.
We all know that the past wasn't what some pretend it to be. But I have to admit that we have lost a certain amount of drive that was present 40, 30 years ago. There is a building of resentment in many that splits our people into two camps--those who accept their place in life, and those who do not. In this sense, many of us share a lot more in common with the bad guys in the repub party--we are more of the mind that we CAN influence our fate. Those who are resigned to their fate are incapable of dreaming--they don't want to make false hopes, or plan plans. They simply want to slip through the cracks of life and live without ado. All they CAN hope for is to die in their sleep, and they live their lives without any complications.
It's not easy to get these people to the point where they will care enough to influence decisions in our government. They've been fed a bill of goods by the bad guys for a very long time. It's difficult to change the perspective they have. It's a catch-22 where ignorance feeds their preconceptions, and their preconceptions feed their ignorance. It is a rare person who manages to break out of that terrible circle, but when they do manage to break out, they find there is no turning back. This alienates them to people they know who haven't escaped from their circumstances, and sometimes works against them.
There is no simple solution--we all know that. Our sociological chaos is not easy to navigate. We end up in an even deeper hole when we try to move in one direction or another. But without some agenda, we are only treading water, and will drown in a sea of apathy before too long.
People who are in sociological work right now are finding it more and more difficult every single day to work. They are overwhelmed by their caseloads, they earn little to no money for the important work they do, and they get no recognition for what they have accomplished. Is there any wonder that the social workers who deal daily with the poverty-stricken in our country are transitioning into other careers, leaving many government positions in the field empty and without replacements?
I wish there was a way to change things, but it isn't going to happen any time soon. And the current government is able to play on the fears of these people, allowing their imaginations to run wild and stifle the voices of many who try to buck the system. There will not be anything to change that as long as the status quo continues. And that's a fact--at least until 2008.

|
I haven't posted in quite awhile, but this is such a helpful explanation, it got the gears turning. You're really giving me some perspective.
Your thoughts are making me think so I think I want to add that I think this kind of mind set can't imagine authority figures being wrong or destructively motivated, especially ones who invoke the talismans of their faith.
Ha! I said "think" three whole times in one phrase...Not Bad!
Another thought--when they are proven wrong and can't admit it, it may not be a matter of arrogance for some. It may be fear of obliteration, since such an error would cast doubt on their saviour, whom many of them believe in rigidly and place their total identity in, told them to vote for bush.
Thanks for pulling me out of hiding. :hi:
Hope my DU addiction doesn't kick back in now! ;)

I know a lot of people think we sit around soaking in hot tubs and sipping martinis, but actually right now I'm working on the district's yearly audit.
I'm really proud of what we're doing here - we've recreated our single comprehensive high school into 6 small high schools, each with a different focus:
Skyview Academy Skyview Expeditionary Learning Skyview Learning Through the Arts Skyview Big Picture High Skyview Early College High Skyview New Technology High
No more than 400 kids in each school. Smaller class sizes; better instruction; lots of new energetic teachers.
Yeah, we're all about turning out drones! :grr:

It's that the schools have been neutralized.
I am happy with the public education that I got. And I worked in the schools as well. It's that good old American anti-intellectualism kicking in. If you are educated, you are in danger of becoming an "elite." And "god forbid" you might be smarter than someone else. A true horror.
They get this way in spite of the schools.

I also had a friend in high school who was homeschooled and who knew someone else who did internet school (she was an aspiring singer/songwriter) and she actually finished school a little early.

63. When advising people to get thier facts straight, |
|
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 07:08 PM by LeftyMom
it is generally advisable to get one's facts straight. Racist assholes who moved thier kids out of public schools as a reaction to desegregation generally moved them to church schools. Homeschooling was generally illegal and nearly unknown at the time.
In the 60's and 70's a movement toward homeschooling (which was of course a much older concept, people have taught thier kids as long as peope have had kids) was led by people concerned primarily with school reform and the best ways to teach children, such as John Holt. This movement was largely concerned with high quality education, and there is very little mention of religion in homeschooling literature of this period. The focus in homeschooling literature of the period is on education methodology and improving the legal status of home education.
A change in tax law in the early 80's led to the closure of many church schools (some of these students may have been enrolled to avoid integration but likely most were just the children of religious families,) and started the fundie homeschooling movement in earnest. (Some people in the fundie community were promoting homeschoooling before then but the number of fundie homeschoolers even as a subsection of the then-tiny homeschooling community was very small.) The fundie homeschoolers set up paralel organizations and wrote thier own homeschooling guides, etc.
Bottom line: homeschooling is not the result of racism.

The first homeschoolers in the most recent wave of homeschooling, which started in the late 70s, were secularists wanting to give their kids the best possible education.
There is a large and growing contingent of liberal, free-thinking homeschoolers.
I'm homeschooling my son this year, largely because we are doing a lot of traveling and public schools do not allow for much time off, but also because I want him to have more opportunities than our local public school can provide. With the help of tutors and mentors, I feel that he is getting a very good education.
It's disappointing to me to see people like Becky, who use homeschooling as a means to keep their children in the dark on subjects that they are personally uncomfortable with. It's also disappointing that so many people associate homeschooling primarily with these fundamentalist types.

Maybe they're keeping her in one spot before it's time for dinner...
Seriously, though, this girl looks way too young to have two children ("baby to young"). She looks as geeky as I did when I was about 13 or 14.

87. How to stock pResident Bush |
|
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 09:07 PM by jmowreader
1) Print out a price label. Affix it to his ass.
2) Put pResident Bush on the shelf.
3) After that, all anyone who needs a favor from his daddy need do is to get the SKU for pResident Bush the Younger, have him rung up at the register, and present their receipt at the big white house in Kennebunkport.
On edit: You must go to Lowe's to obtain this product. I pride myself on the high quality of my merchandise; a Bush on the shelf would totally spoil the effect I'm trying to achieve.

The unmistakable sign of a Bushite
The misuse of the English language, the clear evidence that the poster has watched too much FOX news and engaged her brain too few times, the connection of 9/11 to the travesty (that word means bad thing) happening in Iraq, the unwavering (that word means won't move no matter what) support of an imbecilic (that means stupid) president, and the unoriginal practice of using all caps with multiple exclamation points to denote shock or anger.
Yes, dear, this grieving mother of a son killed by your president's criminal acts is "stocking" George. If that thought calms your pea-sized brain and helps support the fragile reality that you so desperately cling to, then so be it.
Oh, and yes, this post was meant to be purely condescending because a majority of Americans have had it with the foolish sycophants who allow this simpleton and his cabal to destroy our country.
I await your glib response.
