Going to Mississippi tomorrow |
|
I'm from a little town called Long Beach, MS that's on (you guessed it) the beach in MS. Lived there for about 25 years, have tons of friends still there, as well as my parents, who live about 2 miles from the beach. Early report says their neighborhood fared pretty well, so there's hope for that. The bad part is my wife's family lives in Pearlington MS (check it out on mapquest), which is about exactly where the eyewall came ashore. I doubt they still have a home left. Fortunately they evacuated to a gov't facility and are alive. Don't know about her extended family.
I'm loading up on bottled water, non-perishable foods, batteries, flashlight, radio, gasoline, chainsaw, generator, and other stuff I can't remember. I'm not sure I'm ready to view the utter devestation that's down there. From the pictures I've seen I can pick out landmarks that are left and get an idea of how bad it is, but I'm sure it's many times worse when you're there. I'll post about my experience when I get back. God, I can't even imagine how many hundreds of thousands of lives are in ruins. I'm hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

so many of the roads are torn up, you might not be able to get down there. I think some roads are still open for emergency workers only. You might wish to call your state police and ask them before taking a trip down there.

I've heard from a few people that have made it. Having lived there for so long I know some of the back roads. Hopefully I won't run into too many problems.

but make sure you have plenty of gas AND two spare tires, just in case you get flats, which could happen with all the debris around.

5. Take lots of gas. Gas is going for up to $30/gal for sale by individuals. |

My husband saw a report on TV where a woman reporter was running out of gas and she had to buy some from some guy on the side of the road. :scared: Gas prices skyrocketed here in GA today. Over $5.25 in some areas of metro Atlanta today. The shit has hit the fan.
I hope your friends and family are OK. Our family in Lacombe, LA survived, thank God.
