Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 08:08 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
I wasn't going to weigh in on this, but I am thoroughly disgusted with some of the posts I've seen. Even people like me who don't steal have no means of legally buying supplies in a situation like this----NO STORES ARE OPEN. GET IT?? No cashiers are there to collect payment for store items. People have no choice but to take what they need. Are some people taking more than what they need? Maybe, but most are JUST TRYING TO SURVIVE!

3. They HAVEN'T DROPPED any food...
hell-they haven't even dropped any drinking water! They can't even rescue people in a reasonable time frame. So what? Have you ever gone without food or water for 3 days? Geez.........

Peace.

2. I don't think that I have seen anyone on DU
complaining about people looting food and other essential supplies.

I think the concern is about people robbing nurses at gunpoint, carrying off jewelry and televisions, police looting stores along with the other looters, bad people roaming the city in gangs, etc...

I don't think any of us really know how many of the looters down there are carrying off things that aren't essential, but it is clear that some of them are. And I have heard numerous reports today from people (reporters and such) in the city saying that they feel that things are very, very dangerous because of armed looters and other people committing criminal acts.

I think it is pretty naive to assume at this point in time that EVERY SINGLE LOOTER in NO right now is an innocent poor person just taking what they need to survive. I saw KO tonight, and they showed two cops in Walmart "shopping". They didn't look like they were in survival mode to me.

Nobody is suggesting that starving people shouldn't take food. But the dangerous, violent lawlessness is a major problem, and is now interfering with rescue operations. Let's not excuse that behavior.
