I found over 700 internet references to the police chief of Gretna, most with the quote "We shut down the bridge." Thinking about it, I realized that the bridge is important both as a real structure for western expansion and as a metaphor in American life. That police chief may have closed off an actual bridge for a brief period of time, leading to tears, suffering and death, but he will never shut down the bridge in the heart of America.
