Poll question: What do you do during the Pledge of Allegiance?
I stand, but that's it.

Just curious.

1. Trick answer
I'm in a (wheel)chair and I don't "stand." :)

I'm also an atheist, so I skip the godly addition.

2. I say it with certain words removed but
I have been considering the absurdity of a pledge of allegience in a society supposedly predicated on freedom.

3. I try not to be anywhere where the pledge is recited, but would not stand
or pretend if I were. when I worked on military bases, I never acknowledged the salute then, either.

7. One Nation, Under Law
said, very, *very*, VERY loud, so that everyone around hears me.

However, until NOLA is rebuild, I will no longer participate in the pledge or the national anthem.

The government in Washington DC is no longer the government of New Orleans or Louisiana, except in the sense that it is the governmetn of Iraq.

11. Don't do the under god thing
You see, I was in school back in the day when "under God" wasn't in the pledge.

If they must insist on the pledge, why not offer both versions: the original and the revised. People don't know that the original did NOT include "under God" even tho it was written by a Protestant minister!

Personally, I would prefer a pledge of allegiance to the Constitution of the United States. Maybe something that includes "We, the people" and to "promote the general welfare" and other sentiments listed in the preamble.

I am going to memorize the preamble and just quote it to my RW coworkers and acquaintences. Maybe that will shut them the F* up.

24. Me, too!
I remember how STRANGE it sounded to say "one nation, under God, indivisible..." it broke up the accustomed rhythm, and destroyed the schoolboy joke of *giggle, giggle* "one naked individual." I NEVER say "under God" nowadays. I am coming more and more to believe that no American citizen should pledge anything but to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States of America."

26. It's SOP at many public meetings
City councils and whatnot. Many civic organizations also have the ceremony at the beginning of meetings.

And let's not forget the National Anthem before just about every sports event from Little League on up. Different issue, same principle.

Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 05:03 PM by Coastie for Truth
"under Thor" or "under Ganeesh" or "under Vishnu" or "under Krishna" or "under Allah" or "under Bast" -- "under Bast" is my favorite because Bast is the Egyptian Cat God.

<><> <>

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS - ONE NATION UNDER BAST - WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

In my own warped way I thing we should pledge allegiance to the Constitution - period.

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC WHICH IT GOVERNS - WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

22. I don't think I've said it in years.
I would do either 1) stand and say nothing, at least until that misbegotten bastard is out of office, 2) Say it without the "under god" part, since I'm an agnostic. I'd rather say "one nation under Schroedinger's cat"

23. Coming up with an "alternative" pledge might be good.
Edited on Sat Sep-17-05 05:09 PM by StellaBlue
Then say it REALLY LOUDLY.

Like

I pledge allegiance to the flag
Of the Divided States of America
And to the oligarchy for which it stands
One world, under Bush
With hypocrisy and slavery for all.
AMEN!

edited to add: This would be a GREAT way to be dragged from a public assembly in handcuffs. Very anachronistic... long hair flailing wildly, screeching the last line as you are forcibly removed...

haha

25. I stand and recite it
leaving out "Under God."

Those around me can usually hear it. In many cases, they do the same, and we sort of smile at each other and go on.

BTW, I'm a Unitarian, and others to whom I refer are too.

But we recite it at non-Unitarian events.

28. I substitute teach in the public school system.
Our school system has a daily recitation of the Pledge.

For myself, I have absolutely no problem with it. So far, none of the students have made an issue of it. I have decided that if some one ever does, I will not make an issue of their refusal.

I will require that they remain quiet and not distrupt the event for everybody else.

If someone doesn't want to say the pledge, that's fine with me. I refuse to allow anyone to tell me, however, that I can't say it.

36. It doesn't?
Every printed rendition of the pledge I can find has "God" thus, with a capital 'g'. In a predominantly Judeo-Christian society, that implies the Judeo-Christian god, i.e. Yahweh.

38. How do you get that from a capital "G" ?
God is God, whether you see it as Judeo-Christian, or the God in AA. Frankly, if I was to complain about anything in the pledge, it would be the phrase Under God. I always have trouble with putting God "up there" and me "down here." Already they've set me up to be lowly. I always thought Paul explained it rather well. "In Him we move and have our being." Doesn't sound like a God that is "up there" to me. But, as Jesus once said about the Pharisees and Sadducees, "You strain at nats and swallow camels."

33. I would mostly just do nothing
I haven't done it since High school, but when I was in school, I did a varity of things, I would mostly not even stand up, and do nothing, but if there was a teacher that was in charge of the class/homeroom for a day and I knew they were the type that would write you up if you didn't stand and say the pledge, I would either just stand and say nothing or just pretend to say the pledge.

35. They recite it at every K-State football game
And I think they do it at the basketball games also. I will stand and acknowledge the flag respectfully, but I no longer 'pledge' to it. I stand because I want to, out of respect for the flag, because it's my flag, not just the fucked up right wingers'. But I do not place my hand over my heart, to me that's hand in hand with reciting the pledge. I also haven't been singing the national anthem at the games; it feels wrong to sing about being proud of America when we've become such a fucked up nation.
