Do you have "hurricane fatigue"?
The first time I experienced a hurricane was when I was 9 years old. I was staying a few weeks with my grandparents in Galveston. At the time, I thought it was so exciting. My grandfather took us out in the rain and we watched as the waves splashed on the seawall. Luckily, we missed the eye of the storm, 'cause it went on to hit Corpus Christi.

Since that time--which has been many years ago--hurricanes have always fascinated me ...until now. Now, I'm just wondering if we will ever get out of this season...:banghead:

I just can't bear to see anymore destruction to our coastal towns here in the south:cry:

1. More like hurricane anxiety. Seems like they're just lining up.

4. why?
my grandmother wouldn't move from Galveston after living there for 40 years. It just gets in the blood. Hurricanes are not an everday event, but when one like this hits the gulf--or like the last two for that matter--it makes it feel like they are.

Living on the coast is blissfull 98% of the time.

7. I'm 150 miles inland
weather service is predicting hurricane force winds by nightfall tomorrow.

Just where would you suggest I move after this is over?

12. Nacogdoches
at the moment, right on the projected path of the eye.

To be honest, I'm pretty much in denial, or disbelief, of the local warnings going around.

Cat 1 a hundred and fifty miles inland??

Cat 1 in Austin is just so yesterday's forecast. :) Now it's supposedly on a more easterly track. Maybe by morning, it will be a bad thunderstorm and we can just forget all this.

13. There is no place on Earth ..
that is immune from a natural disaster.

Between blizzards, earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, mudslides, etc., where do you live?

I think that better building codes are in order for the ravaged areas, but you can't abandon a habitable area because it may be wiped out. That's like leaving New York City because a terrorist might get ya. The Japanese adapted rather than desert their earthquake and typhoon prone country and I think that the same attitude should carry on here. Instead of running from nature, we should instead scientifically find better ways of making communities and homes more hurricane resistant.

16. Granted on the building codes, I hadn't thought of that...
but there are two sides. Frequency of hurricanes in a given area is something to be considered I think. I saw a report on TV that was about an island off of the coast of South Carolina that has million dollar homes on it. Every time a hurricane hits the island, these homes are destroyed...and the taxpayers foot the bill for the compensation the residents receive. For my part, I think my money is better off anywhere but paying for the preventable.

18. imho you should stfu
until you stop putting gas in yr car & your house heater

until you stop eating chicken, catfish, bananas, coffee, & anything else that ships up the river

until you stop using any chemical manufactured in our refineries

in other words unless you live in a tent & kill & eat yr own damn food you are dependent on the hard dirty work of the ppl of the gulf coast

it would serve you right if we abandoned the place wholesale & left it to mexico or gave it back to the french

then in the immortal words of the 1970s louisiana bumper sticker, let the yankee bastards freeze in the dark

showing yr ass in public is not the way to win friends & influence ppl, my friend, if you are ignorant of all we do for you everyday, educate your ignorant self

and when your cities burns down or earthquakes down or gets caught in a tornado or blizzard, let me be the first to laugh!

3. We still have October and November to go, although
November doesn't usually have much in the way of tropical cyclones. But you never know, especially since Bush's "karma" is cursing us on the Gulf.

9. Weather has always fascinated me
In addition to being a political and news junkie, I'm a weather junkie as well. Living in Kansas for 5 years in the 90's solidified my addiction, going through several tornadoes. I've always watched hurricane activity like a hawk, because up until 2003 my disabled grandfather lived on the east coast of Florida.

Right now though, I just feel mentally exhausted. I can only imagine what the residents of these coastal areas are feeling.
