In the modern day, anyway.

Guess who has received the least votes in his confirmation?

1. for chief or in general
Thomas in general Rehnquist for chief.

Thomas was 52 to 48 and I think Rehnquist was 67 to 33

2. What's *really* sick is that Scalia had no votes against him.
Even Souter had votes cast against him.

4. What's really weird is that some on the left said, "Oh, but he's smart!"
That seriously was about the extent of their argument for voting for him.

6. This is amusing: "Spin" on the vote in a middle school news report
last week.

I was substitute teaching in a white middleclass middle school in a suburb in NJ. The kids do a remote TV news broadcast with the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. The report of Roberts being confirmed was amazing. The host read that Roberts was confirmed by "an overwhelming vote in the Senate". That was too much for me as I knew the split. I involuntarily exclaimed to the homeroom, "Overwhelming?! No way!!!" Not that my opinion challenged the minds of these future voters, but I couldn't let that "news" report go without comment.
