Question about The New Republic journal
what is its political orientation? Pardon my ignorance, but it came up in conversation and I'm not familiar with it.

1. Basically, although not uniformly, DLC.

2. It used to be the liberal response to National Review...
then it went conservative when Fred Barnes was the editor. They're still on my 'out' list.

3. They hosted a Third Way/DLC conference this year.
At Aspen institute I think. I believe they are part of the Third Way Media team. So I would say they are going that direction. I have the sources and more in some posts here.

Once a bastion of great liberal thought but no longer. I subscribed for years but it became another whore for the right. Very sad. I attribute its downfall to the cognotive dissonance of Martin Peretz(pre-9/11 and Clinton hater) and the hiring of Andrew Sullivan.

6. Borrow "What Liberal Media?" from the library.
Eric Alterman (if I'm not mistaken) dedicates an entire chapter to the story/fate of the New Republic.
