An Electric Lawn Mower (not gas powered) . . . .
I've had one now for 2 years and it does a great job on my lawn. Never had a moment's trouble with it.

As I was mowing the grass today, I realized I wanted to share with my fellow DU'ers that it is great way to mow the lawn without have to mess with a gas powered lawn mower.

I have a medium sized backyard that I have to mow.

Mine is a Black and Decker "LawnHog" (a mulching mower) that looks like this

There are other models available:

Just an FYI for next summer . . .

:hi:

3. Yeah, we had one when I was a kid.

Three extension cords covered in multiple duct-tape patches from those unfortunate "slip ups."

7. haha.....Not really though...
I got one too - the trick is to keep going away from the outlet then you won't run over it. We've had ours about 6 years - way less problems than any gas mower, lighter, quieter, no stinky gas.......

23. yeah, you don't have to be genius not to run over the cord . . .
I use the same method as you, and cut away from the outlet side so the cord is always out of the way.

5. I bought a used, battery-powered version of the one you posted. It is
sweet. I have a pretty big yard. About a third of an acre. It cuts it with power to spare. No more $100 tune ups. No more yanking on a cord. No more storing and spilling gas. No more walking behind fumes. No more ear-damaging noise. If people only knew, they would toss those pollution puking mowers in a heart beat. It costs pennies to charge.

6. These are hardly new
I had one as a kid in the 1970's. The cord was a bitch but the ease of starting was very nice. It also wasn't very good at tall grass but that mulching mower looks like it would be much better in that regard.

24. I forgot about the lack of noise
that was the main reason my grandfather got his in the first place. He convinced my parents to get one when our mower went. But my yard was bigger necessitating a bigger cord which I didn't like.

mower. Her yard was relatively small, and the cord never caused me any problem.

Since then, I've become more comfortable with a regular gas mower but I still like the electric.

Even better, I loved my grandad's push mower with now motor at all.

11. That is what I have
Have had one since 1997. Went with the Brill, then moved "down" (in price, but up in size) to the Scotts Classic. I have to cover the lawn twice in opposite directions to get a really good cut. However, that is just what I want. It is for exercise as much as getting the lawn "manicured." Still have not found a good non-motored alternative for the weed eater though.

It is SO NICE to not have a motor going when mowing. Really pleasant.

The cord is not as cumbersome when I'm doing that chore as opposed to mowing the lawn.

25. Mowers....
When my wife and I bought our first home, I went out and bought an old-fashioned push mower. I figured it would be pollution free and would give me a good workout. Uhhhh....not so much. D*mn thing had an incredibly narrow cut width, and missed a lot of blades of grass. Plus, god forbid that I actually went a few extra days without cutting it and it got a little long....It would just push down half of the grass without cutting it. Weeds? Forget about it....rarely cut them. So, I was a young guy looking to make an environmentally friendly choice, and even I decided that it was just ridiculous.

So, I got an electric lawn mower and have been very pleased. Sure, I am using a little electricity, but it is still much better than a gas powered equivalent....and I have to say that my life and time ARE worth something. I am a big time greenie, and figured that the difference in pollution was not worth 2-3 hours of my life per week.

Now, if somebody developed a better push mower, I'd be all over it....but I have never seen one that even made me consider it.

30. Same exact experience here--I had an old-fashioned push mower
and it just didn't get the job done.

But the electric mower is super-easy and the cord is no big deal to me.

35. I am thinking of getting one of those...
I don't know why the hell I bought an electric mower. My yard isn't that big and the mower pictured above would be perfect.

That's it. I'm selling my gas powered mower.

12. I had one for about ten years
I paid $50 for it at an end of the season sale at k mart. One day my granddaughter was mowing the lawn with it and it caught fire violently. She screamed, I came out and pulled the plug but it was too late to save the mower. It made the foulest smelling smoke I ever experienced then melted down into a blackened glob of plastic rubber and metal. It took a year for grass to grow back over the spot. Sometimes I think I can still smell that burning plastic.

17. I've never knicked the cord or anything. You don't have to be a genius
to pay attention to where the cord is!

I cut the grass in a certain way (starting with NEAR the cord outlet and cutting AWAY from the outlet). That way it kind of takes care of itself.

Easy.

Maybe they could come up with a rechargeable type of battery power that's strong enough to run a lawnmower.

22. I have dinky yards
and a dinky 13" Ryobi lawnmower. My first electric. Gives me the giggles, it's like pushing around a wee Fisher Price toy, but it works like a champ (ran over the cord 2 weeks ago though, had to string together 5-6 household cords to finish the job).

36. mine is solar powered
I have a solar electric system (aka The Solar Bus). I have a gas lawnmower that is wider and I use it if the grass is tall and I'm in a hurry.

Otherwise, I plug my electric lawnmower into the Solar Bus. My 2500 watt inverter has no problem with it.

38. Here's a picture of my mower
It is self-mulching, converting the grass in to fertilizer. It does
not take any electricity or petrol, and is self-controlled. And, for
all the noise it makes, is relatively quiet next to most mowers.

45. Lawns....
Made me think of the old "Victory Gardens".

Some ares of the country have lots of water for lawns, other areas waste scarce water to maintain these useless lawns.

This year, my neighbor dug out his front lawn and has planted it with vegetables. The squash are ripening and look so beautiful.
