Lynndie England: The Perfect Soldier (really fucking stupid)
Okay, I understand what the term "cannon-fodder" means, but why people this fucking dumb are put in positions of authority, even in Bush's military, I'll never understand.

BTW, it'll be interesting to see if the ol "flip-flopper" catchphrase is going to be dug out of MSM mothballs for this story. She's folding faster than Superman on laundry-day.

2. She had enough authority to be in a position of power over detainees.
Whether sanctioned or not, it happened. She was a 20 year old idjit, ferchrissakes.

9. NO she didn't
she was a clerk typist who came over to the detention center on her own time. She had absolutely no authority and shouldn't have been there. The people who failed were the ones in authority who didn't make sure this happened...the officers.

6. Exactly.
That's what I meant by "perfect soldier". I meant perfect for Bush's war.

5. she is just a Patsy
a token sacrificial lamb to divert attention away from the real issues. What she did was shitty but by focusing (there might be two letter "s" in that word - never could spell it) on her sordid behaviour we forget it has been repeated time and time again. Get the scumbags at the top, not her.

8. I agree to a point.
But there are established codes in military law which dictate a soldier must not participate in actions which are contrary to the Geneva Convention, and other treaties.

I used to have copies of these things...wish I still did.

My point is, you can go after the scumbags at the top, but the best case scenario is that they'll be relieved of their commands and replaced by other, identical scumbags. You have to start at the bottom, and punish the soldiers who commit the crimes, whether under orders or not.

You don't leave your conscience at the door when you put your uniform on. At least you're not supposed to.

10. fair comments there friend
some Nazis used that defence at Nuremberg. In her shoes what would either of us have done? Difficult question that can only be answered truthfully if we were placed in her shoes.

I accept your point wholeheartedly my friend...I just think the real issue is who gave the order in the first place?

Friendship from over the pond and a little bit to the north of London...several hundred miles actually.

13. Being a grunt
shouldn't prevent you from being punished if you commit a crime, but the buck should not stop with you either.

Pr. England should go to jail, as should all the officers, including Cheney and/or Rumsfeld!

11. I'm going to get flamed for this,
but I feel sorry for her.

I don't know that I would call her stupid. In fact, I know I wouldn't. The only people I would dream of calling stupid are people who have had all the advantages & still screw up. Gee, remind you of anyone? From the (admittedly) little I've read of England she's had zero advantages. Not a great home life, certainly no money, not a high IQ. She really didn't have a lot of career options & thought the military would work out for her. I really think she's a victim. And no, I don't believe women are always the victim & men of the big, bad wolves. But in this case England trusted the wrong people & probably got caught up in the praise from those above who told her she was doing a great job. It may well be the only time she got praise from someone in authority in her life.

best

Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 06:20 PM by MichiganVote
but what about all the boys who issued the orders. No need to get after them so long as the military can scapegoat the females in this thing. Gee, this is new. (Not!)

14. Two females were convicted.
Sabrina Harmon got a few months.

The rest that were convicted were males. No person past Sgt. has been convicted regarding Abu Grahib, so far. The private Corp. at this prison got a renewed contract. There are around 26 other prisons but no photos or vids from them so we hear little about those.

It is obvious that "abuse" and torture have been and still are encouraged by the top from Prez. on down.

Congress has failed in their duty to upholed the US Constitution.

Rumsfailed Admitted to Violating Geneva Convention

Rumsfailed admitted in public on TV that when CIA Director Tenet requested that an Iraqi prisoner be sent to a secret Afghan/US Prison that Rumsfailed did so. After four months a DOD Attorney stated that this was an illegal act. Rumsfailed then ordered that this prisoner be sent back to Abu Graihib but the prisoner was purposefully not listed at that location, also an illegal act. Rumsfeld also admitted to signing orders for tougher interogation methods which violated the Geneva Conventions.

Rumfailed has commited at least three violations of the Geneva Convention thereby also violations of The Constitution of the USA. Recently it has been found out that even more detainees were "ghost detainees". The fact that Rumsfailed and Tenet have not been charged speaks volumes. If Congress wishes to garner any respect they should move forward with Rep. Rangle's Impeachment Declaration of Rumsfailed and also proscecute Ex. CIA Tenet.

The US, Govt., Congress, and the Justice Dept no longer abide by the Geneva Convention or the Constitution of the USA.

15. No flames here, either.
God, just take one look at her now, and you can see how far she's fallen already. Your take on her seems right-on to me.

My question is whether she will just rot in a military prison or get some help.

I know there are those who want her to undergo the same treatment she and Graner doled out. I'm not saying I don't wish that for Graner, who had power in the situation, and who is obviously a sadist. I don't think the same is true of Lynndie England.

18. I never saw any sadistic behavior in England, either.
I just got the impression she was caught up in being 'one of the boys'. Like she said, higher-ups were telling her what a great job she was doing. Sure, she should have thought it thru, but she's not bright & she wanted to please her commanders. And probably her BF too.
