I think there is some amount of subterfuge involved in this outcry. I believe that Miers is probably a stealth candidate as far a Roe vs. Wade is concerned and that much of this outcry is manufactured. If confirmed, I believe she will vote to overturn Roe. However, fearful of losing abortion as a wedge issue, Bush has now appointed two justices who seem open to civil rights for gays, thus creating a new wedge issue that was tested in the last election. I think we need to be prepared to fight for Roe on a state level. However, I do think we will see a SC ruling somehow affirming gay marriage, probably also framed as a "sate's rights" issue. This will give the RW a new screeching (er, I mean "talking" point) for the next thirty years. The new nominees will support Bush as far as his current legal troubles, as well as his extra-legal definitions of the Constitution vis a vis the war on "Terra."
At least, that's my take.

But Gay rights could be used just as effectively in regards to rallying the base.

NARAL seems to do fairly well with fundraising and abortion is still legal.

5. So would failing to overturn Roe v. Wade, though |
|
If Bush hasn't appointed two justices who will vote to overturn, it's the end of the right wing support for republicans. If they can't trust Bush to get it down, they won't trust any republican.
So Bush really has no choice but to appoint anti Roe, and hoping that they get voted down.

6. Abortion isn't the war...it's one battle |
|
They'd be screaming their nutjob heads off about how they won and stopped infantcide. They would praise gawd and look to new ways of forcing their hypocritical ways down the throats of the rest of the country.
They've got a bible full of causes to fight.

This theory, which I have now seen repeated quite a bit these last few days, is dubious at best. I understand the theory's basic assumption: overturning roe v wade would push a lot of fence sitting soccer moms over to the D side while sending a lot of R voting fundy-loons back to their trailer parks and out of the voting booths. However the OP has a point. The Cabal has been nurturing homophobia as a wedge issue and now is in position to both deliver on their promise to bring back the coat hanger as a medical instrument, and keep some number of those soccer moms confused enough to continue to vote for the vile shitheads. The fundy-loons will not only show up at the polls to put them gays back where they belong, but will worship the ground upon which the Cabal walks. Dream on that Roe v Wade is not at risk. Dream on that they wouldn't dare. Consider what they have dared so far:
They have dared to steal at least two national elections. They have dared to MIHOP or LIHOP the worst terrorist attack on our nation in our history. They have dared to lie with abandon and take our nation to war on false premises. They have dared to torture, kill, and rape prisoners. They have dared to stand by and watch as one of our cities drowned.
They wouldn't dare to overturn Roe v Wade?
