Gay Republicans: The Movie
I just watched a documentary called "Gay Republicans" about the Log Cabin Republicans and their debate over whether or not to endorse Bush during the 2004 campaign. If there is any doubt in your mind that the Republican party, as it exists today, is nothing but a huge cult then you should see this movie. It focuses of four LC members, three men and one woman, and their feelings about the Republican party, gays and gay marriage. I don't want to spoil anything so let's just say that by the end of the movie it looks as though there might be hope for two of them but the other two are two of the most obnoxious, loathsome examples of people who put party over country--and even party over their own civil rights--that you will ever see. I couldn't even watch the movie in one sitting, I thought my head would explode. Some of it was so bizarre that I almost suspected that it was a scripted work of fiction but it's actually one of those "Truth is stranger than fiction" things. A must see.

2. I just watched the DVD last week ...
... and I have to say that there are some moments when my jaw almost hit the floor from some of the comments that are made.

I agree with your assessment on the two irredeemable Log Cabinites. One was loathsome to the point of almost being unwatchable without the urge of throwing something at the screen.

The other had one of the most memorable ironic lines in the movie when he was talking about how he'd rather be in a room full of Repugnantcans than in a room full of gays and made the statement that if he didn't mention his gayness, no one else would be aware of it among all those Repukes. My thought at that point was Oh, Mary, puh-leeeeez! You're sitting there with frosted hair, manicured nails on hands that flail around like your wrists are rubber an a voice that's only slightly lower than Truman Capote on helium and you claim to be 'straight-acting'? Now there's a secret you could die with, girlfriend!

3. When Mr. Frosted Hair went campaigning...
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 09:08 AM by skypilot
...in West Hollywood (!!!) I thought to myself that some of this movie must be some kind of satire. I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. The scene where he knocks on the guy's door and starts into his spiel for Bush while the guy listens politely ended up on a note that I thought was funny and horrifying.

I was also floored to hear Mr.Frosted say that gays and lesbians did in fact have the right to marry, they could marry members of the opposite sex and then later in the movie you see an anti-gay protestor carrying a sign that says the exact same thing.

8. Oy!
They're making my head explode just reading about it! I remember watching the pbs documentary "The Architect" and they talked to a gay guy who campaigned for Bush in 2000 but afterwards felt betrayed by him with his stance on gay people. I don't get how a gay person could be a republican.

21. It was the best scene in the movie.
He goes to this guy's house, starts in with is speil. The guy is listening politely and glancing at the literature that was given to him.

Jump cut to a few minutes later: The West Hollywood guy is SCREAMING at the Log Cabiner. They get into a very heated and nasty argument. The WeHo guy probably held out alot longer than I would have.

23. Now that I think about it....
...you know what the scene reminded me of? If you've ever seen "Curb Your Enthusiasm", it was like a scene from that show. You know how Larry David just has a tendency on the show to rub everyone wrong and piss them off? That's what this LC guy was like--only more obnoxious and pathetic.

My deer departed brother had wrists like that. One time we were walking down Castro St and he was talking and I had to stop one of this wrists in mid fling. He almost smacked someone in the face.

*sigh* God I miss that queen.

5. How much does a gay person have to hate themselves
To join a party that doesn't want them? Man, that gives whole new meaning to the word masochism.

I'm gay and I can't tolerate the Log Cabin Republicans. I wrote them all and told them they were an embarrassment during the 2000 and 2004 elections.

6. I'm beginning to think Log Cabinites ...
... are so much self-loathing as they are expressing their loathing for the "gay community."

Perhaps they feel they been rejected or can't get laid, but whatever it is, I've heard them bash "the gay lifestyle" continuously (as if there was a "gay lifestyle").

Some of that undoubtedly comes from projecting their feelings of self-loathing, but I think another part of it is that their support for the GOP is a form of saying "fuck you" to a group they feel they've not been accepted by.

7. I don't know if you've seen the movie or not....
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 09:22 AM by skypilot
...but you really should. Sometimes the characterization of Log Cabiners as self-hating almost sounds too simplistic, cliched and pat but after watching this documentary and hearing what some of these people were saying I don't think that explanation is simplistic and pat at all anymore. I usually don't feel pity for people I dislike but there was one guy in this thing who was almost too pathetic to be believed. I actually started to feel bad for him.

On edit: Duh!!! Of course, you've seen the movie. I got confused when posting.

When I found out, before the election, my boyfriend's sisters where repugs I almost lost it. Two women, who are dearly in love with their gay brother, voting for these ass-wipes. Because they keep them safe from terrorism in down-state Illinois.

13. Parakeeting.
One guy, an absolutely despicable rich momma's boy from Palm Beach was bragging about how he'd convinced his mother to stop watching news on the three major networks and watch FOX exclusively. Of course, he called it "fair and balanced". I can attest to the fact that this guy didn't say one original thing during the entire movie. These peoples' very thoughts are talking points.

hero's started spewing the anti-gay rhetoric.I guess they feel they are different from "those" gays, you know, the ones at the pride parade in drag or in leather. I could go on and on about these assholes...grrrrrrrr. I have had quite a bit of experience with them online. I even got into it with one guy in the Connecticut gay.com chat room once that I swear was straight from some militia/survivalist encampment, a timothy mcveigh type, yapping about god, libruls, the new world order, and the united nations.

16. I've had a few on-line run-ins with those types myself
I'm almost tempted to post links to some of their online profiles just so people could see how they can incorporate right-wing talking points into even their profiles ... but why give the assholes any sort of publicity?

Just let them go on with the masturbatory fantasies about Rush Limbaugh, Jeff Gannon, and the other closet cases from the GOP.
