I'm about to piss off the Campus Crusade For Christ. |
|
They're having one of their trademark deceptive ad campaigns. I simply made a flyer stating that the "Do you Agree with Adam" campaign is brought to you by Campus Crusade For Christ, what they intend to do, and the fact that I don't like misleading campaigns.

4. For those of us who missed this in college, can you elaborate? |
|
What are they about, what's deceptive about them, and what's in the "Do You Agree with Adam?" campaign?

They're the Evangelical organization on campus. I don't know about all campuses, but on ours and several others they're known for doing campaigns and events where you do not know who's sponsoring it until you show up. With the Adam campaign, for example, they covered campus with the message "Do you agree with Adam" without any clear indication of who Adam was, what he believes, and what organization the message is from. The trick is to get as many curious people to show up for when Adam preaches about the joy of Jesus.

7. Yeah, we had something like that. It was about this man named "Josh". |

They thought that it was cute and was smart marketing. I was extremely embarrassed to be associated with the group that was doing it. Most people who show up are just p*ssed that they were misled. The thing that I remember most about Josh was that he bragged about never having masturbated once while his wife was pregnant. WHO-HOO for him! I could have lived without that knowledge. It was something that he was really proud about. OK, but did I really need to know about it?
This was over 20 years ago. I'm surprised that they're still doing it. It must work.

Nothing like a little deception to introduce a message of hope and love. I know that deception is the first thing that leaps to my mind whenever I'm in love or hoping for something. Hey CCC! Let your yes be yes and your no be no. This campaign is deceptive and you should have a pretty fair idea who the Father of Lies is.

You apparently weren't attending the same CCC meetings I did in college. Most of what I heard there was talk about how gays should all be taken out in a field and shot for their sin, how it was ok to "discipline" a wife who wouldn't submit, how doctors who performed abortions deserved to be shot, how beer would get you eternal hellfire.
Love and hope?

10. Well, I wasn't referring to CCC in particular |
|
But rather the message of the gospels in general. I have no history, recent or even in the distant past of my own undergrad days, of what CCC is about.

11. My branch of CCC never mentioned the things that yours did. |
|
However, I could see how it could have gone in that direction. That's why I got out as soon as my promised period of time was over. When you were in it, did you have to promise to stay in it for the academic year? I was counting the days. (However, if they had said the things that yours said to you, I'd have been out of there in a heartbeat.)
I also loved the fact that you weren't supposed to date anyone who wasn't born again. Also, going to the student center to try to "save souls" was one of my favorite things to do. :sarcasm:
I don't have any good memories about being a member of this organization.

17. No promises to stay for the year |
|
I definitely wouldn't have dealt with that: I came and went as I pleased. I also missed the proselytizing in the student union. Ours was mainly a Friday night (i.e., while the rest of the town was out getting shitfaced) group.
As for dating anyone who isn't born again, that's standard fundie fare. When I was in high school, that was one of the primary arguments my pastor used in trying to convince me to go to a "Christian" college. I just wouldn't meet and good bible-believing men at a secular school, and since finding a mate was the main reason why women went to college . . .

when churches advertise, particularly with initiatives like the "Do you agree with Adam" campaign. The old mystery slogan thing is so Madison Avenue. Do we really need Madison Avenue to access our spirituality?
