The Power of Nightmares - WMP codec problems
I downloaded The Power of Nightmares from Daily Kos, but I can't play it. Does anyone know what codec I need and where I get it?

2. DIVx player.
http://Divx.com

I recommend downloading the whole player, not just the codec. It will not mess with your WMP settings.

Also, if you downloaded the larger version of the episode, (around 300mbs each) you'll be disappointed if you are running anything less than a 1ghz machine. The viddy has a high frame rate.

I'm assuming you have the same version that I downloaded. Good luck!

4. The free version is bundled with ads...
I don't use it at all.

There are codecs available on the internet without having to download players or risk infection.

I quit using divx over a year ago.

5. I agree.
I had the same problem identifying codecs and in a rush, I downloaded DivX.
I got rid of it right away and use GSpot now.
That'll teach me to skip the research.

3. Download GSpot.
I use it for my bit torrent downloads.
It will identify the codec you need to play the file.

7. I haven't tried GSpot...
I've been looking for bittorrent software, but have heard about problems with spyware with many of them.

I had to do a hard restore on my system over the weekend because of a nasty trojan that wouldn't go away no matter what I did. I'm skittish right now and haven't even used any P2P software.

I'll check out GSpot. Thanks :)

8. Yuck.
Any idea where it came from?
I've never had a problem with any bit torrents.
The client I use is Azureus.

6. Any windows users ever try VLC?

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Just interested how it works over there in MicroSerf land. Over here in the land-o-linux I use that and mplayer. One of the two will usually end up playing just about anything flawlessly (vlc's more flexible, but mplayer is more well desktop integrated, at least at the moment.)

9. Not yet.
It looks great and my dad keeps telling me to go with Linux for everything.
Just haven't made the move yet, but I will.

On edit: I might just try it, the file is small and the screen shots look awesome.

10. Moonlight Elecard MPEG Player eval was what I ended up using
I watched all three chapters on this rainy holiday. Good stuff. In the end, I think it offers a positive outlook, I just wonder who the next wave of insane ideologues will be.
