Anyone wonder if Mieirs is a "first pick" ploy to help a "second pick"? |
|
Perhaps Bushco realized that the Dems weren't going to let another nomination of us go through without a big fight and scrutiny, and that his base would be adamant about a rw thug that the Dems wouldn't allow, perhaps he put on Mieirs KNOWING that she was going to pull herself out of contention at some point after they've gone through some pain the first week or two of looking at her.
Perhaps he feels that if the Dems feel that they "win" in keeping her from getting confirmed, they'll be less apt to try and nix a subsequent nomination from him that perhaps will be the person he and Rove really want to be on the court. Or at least they'll feel that the public will have been "placated" into thinking that the Dems fought "enough"... That would certainly be something that's Rove's style!
If that's the case and she does pull out, we have to NOT LET UP in scrutinizing Bush's replacement pick! Might even be more dangerous than either Roberts or Mieirs!

The Democrats are offering no resistance, and in fact are actually *defending* her against the right-wing attacks. Seriously, everyone knows the attacks are coming from the right. They've split the party. They've angered the base. And Bush has *never* angered his base on purpose.

2. If so, a major screwup for the Bush team. |
|
What's that, a bazillion in a row?
But it sure blew up in his face. We're not having to fight it at all. We can quietly agree with people like George Will that Miers is pathetically unqualified for a position on the U.S. Supreme Court and then watch and enjoy while half of the right rips the other half a new one. It's also useful to know which usual suspects value their loyalty to GWB more than their ideology, and vice-versa.
But your point is still valid. Let's not laugh so hard over this .38 to the foot that we relax our guard for the next nominee.

5. yep, approximately one minute after she was announced |
|
but it was a strategic blunder nonetheless.
BushCo was expecting some fake division to stoke us dems into a shameful display of partisanship, but they failed to anticipate that it would become very real division in their own ranks.
All I can do is laugh at those maroons.

7. Dubya isn't that smart. He thought this was going to help him. |
|
This had to be all Bush. He picked her because she kisses his ass, and he thinks that means she's smart. He's stupid, this stupid ... http://www.webcomicsnation.com/neillisst

8. I think this has a Rove smell to it! |
|
Dubya's not been making these sorts of decisions up there and we know it... You can bet he had others to pick Roberts for him. Rumor was that Roberts was Rehnquist's personal choice to succeed him.

9. I worried about that until I realized that her nomination was just the |
|
usual B* cronyism. Pick anyone who will CYA (CTA'a) (CYA cover your ass...CTA cover their arses). From what I understand, Meirs knows about B* I selling the weapons to Saddam H. in the first place, and his attempts to turn SH into Hitler personified prior to the Gulf War. Meirs could and likely would keep all of the BFEE's nasty little secrets quiet.
Now I'm worried that she will drop out, and we'll really get a nightmare. To be perfectly honest though, I care about many other issues than the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. I don't think it will happen. The only friend I have that has had an abortion years ago, is a Republican. Not for religious reasons, but purely for self-interest (read tax cuts for the wealthy.)
