Alternative Secure Links for DU? Help me please! Skinner, somebody!
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 10:10 PM by Stand and Fight
My employer has flipped! For some time since they switched our network both DU and AAR have been blocked. A fellow DUer and myself are going nuts to say the least, since we're in a red state we are surrounded by Right-Wing FReep-types.

Since we're now under a different domain, liberals like myself cannot get to this site or many other liberal sites. They have us behind what is called an "optimistic" firewall. (Interestingly enough, I'm able to get to Free Republic and Rush Limbaugh, but since I despise both of them, it does me no good.)

Does anyone here know of an alternative, secure link to get on DU? I know when we had server issues a few months back one was posted. I have used a proxy service, but even that is detectable. One of the techs came upstairs to my office the other day saying he'd received a message that my computer was acting strange. I heard him coming, so I erased my history and deleted all cookies. My proxy service is completely secure, but I have to log on. I'm just curious as to rather or not DU will work with a hypertext protocol connection that is secure. (httpS:// rather than http://)... So, anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Your Friendly Neighborhood,

Stand and Fight

PS: I should clarify. I'm able to get to the home page. It is the discussion forums that are prohibited because they have been categorized as "chat." Strange that. Isn't FR "chat"?

Edit again: Thank you xultar.

1. The IP address
for democraticunderground.com is 216.158.28.199, in case that helps.

2. Be careful my friend.
We don't want you to get let go because you want to read DU.

5. I have to agree with catgirl. If your IT guy is good, he'll find
what you're doing. As much as I love DU, it's not worth losing your job over! Can't you just wait until you get home to catch up?

6. I work very long days sometimes.
The problem is because the site is thought to be un-secure. That was the excuse I was given over a year ago, but then -- and I've checked many times since -- I was able to get to Free Republic. So, basically the military blocks DU and AAR but not right-wing sites or the same category.

7. So Quit Working For Nazi-Types
Why are you working for them, don't you know they support torture, treason and numerous other war crimes?

How long do you think you'll remain innocent? How nieve are you?

12. There could be another reason DU and AAR was blocked.
Productivity.

13. Then why is FreeRepublic not blocked?
Perhaps the company figures non-Freepers are more productive anyway. The others can waste their time & the company won't suffer.

15. Does anyone there read FR?
If they are monitoring the network there are probably tons of entries for DU and maybe none for FR.

18. I'm in a red, red, red state.
Every county went for Bush. Every precinct as well. I can count the Democrats I work with on ONE hand. So, trust me -- there are FAR fewer instances of DU, and plenty of FR. In fact, I hear FR referenced and talked about plenty.

17. No.
Free Republic is not blocked -- neither is Drudge, Rush Limbaugh, etc... And I see Republicans reading and talking about those sites ALL THE TIME.

14. Do you work for
a federal agency? I saw this article yesterday, but it doesn't explain why some sites are accessible and others aren't.

16. Turn the tables on your employer.
Tell him you want to know 'what the other side is up to', and you need access to the liberal sites in addition to the sites 'you believe in'.

My very liberal brother in NYC actually visits Free Republic daily to see what they are talking about. :puke:

21. Have you tried this
proxy service?
http://proxify.com/

Proxify™ is a web-based anonymous proxy service which allows anyone to surf the Web privately and securely. Unlike other proxies, there is no software to install or complicated instructions to follow. Just enter a URL (website address) in the form above. Through Proxify, you can use websites but they cannot uniquely identify or track you. Proxify hides your IP address and our encrypted connection prevents monitoring of your network traffic. Once using Proxify, you can surf normally and forget that it is there, protecting you.

22. You might try an SSH tunnel
Sounds like an internet filtering program like Websense. If this is the case you may be able to get around the block by setting up an SSH tunnel to a home computer. You need to run an SSH server and client and set up the connection. It may not work, if port 22 is not forwarded or is monitored in some way.

I am not a computer expert, perhaps someone in the forum could give you more info.

Here is a link that may help, unfortunately, all the links I acquired when I was setting up the tunnel are lost.

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/RemoteDesktop/SSH-RDP-VNC/RemoteDesktopVNCandSSH.html

I was able to get around Websense, Linux server at home and windows client at work, for two years without a hitch. The company never had a clue......
