Judge Roy Amin...
I recall an old western, I think with Paul Newman, about the old wild west judge, Roy Bean. He was well known around his parts for " quick justice". He decided who was guilty and pronounced death by hanging on the spot.

Watching the judge at the Saddam trial this morning, I got the same idea. From what I've heard and what I've read, Saddam was a ruthless and murderous dictator, deserving of the death penalty. However, we should not pretend he is getting a "fair trial" with Judge Roy Amin sitting in judgement.

1. Not defending the guy, but we (the US) backed him on so much of what
he did there. We have a couple of ex-presidents who should be sitting in the dock with the guy. (Reagan is dead so he's out of it.) Also, don't for a minute forget that without good old Donald Rumsfeld and his handshaking and deal making, he wouldn't have had the weapons and nerve gas for the stuff he's on trial for now.

How can we put the head of a sovereign nation on trial when we (the government, not us in particular) are his partner in crime.

And now Iran wants him charged in regard to that war. Sort that one out in regard to our guilt. I don't even know where to begin.

2. I would not be surprised if Hussein hanged himself in his cell
before the trial re-convenes.

His testifying about arms deals with Rummy and Cheney in the Reagan years would be too embarassing.

3. I think there is a good chance of assassination...
that would solve a lot of dirty problems, wouldn't it?
