50. i don't consider telephones to be an "information source"...
or radio either, for that matter-

telephones would be classified as "communication devices"

radio is an "entertainment device"(except in an emergency...and then you need local, not satellite info)

and newspapers can always be had for free.

42. nope.
i have satellite TV- the last time i checked, tv is not the same thing as radio.
i consider what i watch on television to be entertainment- radio is just background...i don't know of too many(o.k., NONE) people who just sit and listen to the radio for entertainment as if it were television- they're usually doing something else, and just have the radio on to kill the silence.

That is, when my nine-year-old is not around. Since you can carry it from car to car, Beloved Daughter only wants to listen Radio Disney and XM Kids. If I have to listen to that 'crazy frog' song again ..

to get the boombox kit for $69 and then to retail for a car kit (which honestly to say, will cost the same as the $39 SkyFi2 Car kit, but you would have to pay for two radios six months service doing it that way).

10. I love my Roadie!
I got it free when I got XM for my truck. I use it in my barn so that when I work out there I don't get too bored or miss anything and that is really important at this crucial time! We also use it when we go on trips in my husbands car. It is an outstanding little thing.

11. I've been considering XM... some questions
What's the best solution for me:

1) listen mostly at home, but would want portability within house
2) would need to take into car
3) occassionally would want to carry it with me like a walkman

Do I need multiple units? If so, does each one cost $13/month for service? If not, which one is most suitable? Does the FM transmitter function work well? What about headphones/speakers?

Any advice from the users would be appreciated, thanks!

12. Some answers....
First on the multiple unit cost, $13/mo for the 1st, $7/mo for each additional (up to 4 additional on an account).

BASED ON WHAT YOU'RE SAYING - I would recommend one of the XMToGo units (I lean toward the Pioneer)...

- it's portable when you want

- it comes with a car kit for mouniting in the car

- it comes with a home kit for hooking up to powered speakers or the home stereo.

RATHER THAN POWERED SPEAKERS, I would look at the Altec Lansing XM3020 ($99 at most stores) to go with a portable (picture below). It's the closest thing to a boombox for the portables...

NOW, if you took out the 'walkman' requirement, I would point you at a SkyFi2 Boombox Combo and then get a CarKit at retail...

The XM Modulator is fairly good, but a direct hookup is always best...

get the SkyFi2 BoomBox model and then down to BestBuy or Amazon and get a Car Kit (I know, the Car Kit there costs as much as the SkyFi2 Car Kit bundle on this deal, but then you have to pay for 2 radios of service.. unless you want to get a pair for anyone that's home while your off driving :D ).

Edited on Wed Oct-19-05 07:29 PM by IanDB1
Do not try to do this:

1) Purchase XM Radio receiver
2) Activate subscription for one month.
3) While leaving receiver in the "on" position, wrap it in aluminum foil.
4) Leave receiver turned-on but wrapped-up for ninety days.
5) After 90 days, un-wrap receiver and enjoy free satellite radio

20. What if we already have XM service to our car but were thinking about
getting one for home or the boom box? I can't figure out how that would work, would it just start billing to the card it bills to now but as a second service (I think its $5.00 for another subscription). Could I still get the deal or is it for new customers only??

21. You'll need to pay the full price for the 1st 3 months of 'pre-paid'...
that comes with the unit. After 3 months call Customer Care and have it switched to the Family Plan. That's what I did last year with 2 SkyFi2's. (yeah, that's an extra $18 per radio.. but compare the costs of buying it outright, specially the portables).

To me, being able to listen to what I want when I want it anywhere is certainly worth a few bucks a month to me.

We don't go on a whole lot of big fancy vacations - so we invest in satellite radio and satellite television.

I sure am looking forward to the rumored station 168 coming on board (that WILL be a great birthday/Christmas present) - let it be so!

it's a $400 bill to get Sirius out and XM in (Audi A6 w/factory radio/CD/satellite head unit).

Any way to stick XM on as an add-on?

32. Well..... now that you mention it....
call in to INQUIRE about renewing, check the rates and all that stuff... then mention you had a friend in Houston who just got a 1 year renewal for $77.

Yeah... $77.

If you get the CSR to offer it, pounce (dunno if you can up it for 2 at that time), if not say "I'll decide on how many years to renew and get back to you".. wait a little while (hour or so) and try again..

that game is called CSR - "Customer Service Roulette".

NO PROMISES, but give it a whirl..

35. Just as an aside to that CSR roulette,
I tried that with my cable - couldn't see paying $100 for crap and had people tell me, "call, tell them you're canceling, and they'll make you a six month offer". So, I called and said I wanted to go down to basic cable and they didn't offer me any special deals whatsoever.

I'll check into this - thanks!

XMPR (XM Public Radio w/Bob Edwards) and High VOltage (Opie & Anthony).... a nice email campaign to AIR AMERICA (not XM or DirecTV) would be in order... it's a rights issue and they generally won't pickup talk channels because of all the rebroadcast rights...
