Anybody hear Gergen on Lou Dobbs? WOW! |
|
He said the wheels have come off the wagon, and it's going to be very difficult if not impossible for George Bush to put them back on!
There's an arrogance that seems to come with a second term, no matter wether they're Dem or Pub, that makes them do things they shouldn't.
His closing words were referencing what Reagan did when he had the Iran Contra problem. He CLEANED HOUSE! He threw everybody out and started over. It gave him a new starting slate! ____________________________________________________________________
Now, I know lots of you dislike David Gergen, but he's a pretty middle of the road guy. He rarely gets this dramatic with his speach!
I also don't believe Shrub is smart enough to use the "clean house" idea of Reagan. That decision will bring him down with the rest of them!

Why on earth give him "credit"? He got status, the appearance (unearned) of some sort of "elder statesman" role, and then he promptly betrayed the man who had hired him. But only after doing absolutely nothing to earn his pay.
And, what I particularly like, he has never been accorded the "elder statesman" status he so craves, because he's a perfect sell-out, even working as the token conservative at the JFK School at Harvard.

Oh, you're serious?
Who watches TV news?
I'm a reader and an old Washington lawyer and I'm fond of public forums in which different pundits appear and speak, sometimes spar.
TV cleans up all sorts of sludge far too neatly. It makes all extremes appear palatable to the unwitting public. Like the ones who watch TV and think they're seeing what's there, when, in fact, they're just reacting to good lighting..

Hey I didn't ask you that, I was trying to see if your pov with regard to pundits was even in the same realm as Mr or Mrs Average.
Tv cleans up all the shilling then? Now your confusing me.
While I pointed to tv (which is where the op topic originated from), the question wasn't necessarily limiting in that way so comments about conservative pundits that don't appear on tv might be interesting to hear.
Maybe you are avoiding talking specifics cause you are having second thoughts about the RW shill comment?
As to why I am taking up this discussion, I feel that bloggers tend to make discussions about good bi-partisan efforts pretty much impossible anymore and that is a shame especially for the minority party.

I was astounded that he would extoll Cheney's virtues including honesty and decency and seem so sure that Cheney was innocent of any wrongdoing in the leak. 36. Gergen's Right - Which Is Why Dear Leader Won't Do It |
|
I've had conversations about this with friends, and over and over they've pointed out that Reagan was smart enough to both fire people (Watt) and make sure guys jumped on the sword for him (Poindexter). By doing that, he was able to keep pretty much above the political fray. Had Reagan been around on 9/11, you bet your ass that the CIA and FBI heads would've rolled within days -- and if people lied about weapons they would've been gone too.
Now I'm not defending Reagan on a policy level. I'm sure that guys who would've been fired would've then been rewarded with jobs at Bechtel or Carlysle or Heritage, but at least he would've been able to hold up a fig leaf of action.
Dear Leader, by contrast, never does anything wrong! So firing people is simply not part of their equation ... and, at long last, that inability to assign SOMEbody to take some blame has been teething on his ass, threatening to turn bloody at any minute.

48. Bush is apparently psychologically unable to fire anyone. In the rare |
|
cases where an insider has told him he was wrong, and therefore had to be excised, shrub had someone else do it (e.g. Paul O'Neil says in his book he was canned by a call from Cheney, not from shrub. My theory: shrub is tortured by the knowledge that he really isn't qualified for his job (or pretty much any job, for that matter), and giving someone the old heave ho hits too close to home for him. Of course, not firing a host of treasonous leakers and perjurers will highlight this pathological hangup of shrub's, not to mention causing chaos in the remaining shreds of what was the BushCo administration.
My prediction: shrub will crack under the pressure and be eased out for 'health reasons'. Only question is who will be the new vp-soon-to-be-pres? Probably more adult repubs will insist on a moderate, since any BushCo/DeLay type will only end up going up in flames soon after taking office.
