Why doesn't NYTimes fire Judy Miller.
She has only brought them shame and disgrace. Are they paying her legal fees?

~snip~ The comments by Robert Bennett came as Executive Editor Bill Keller accused Miller of apparently misleading the newspaper about her dealings with Vice President Cheney's top aide, signaling the first public split between Miller and the management of a newspaper that had fully embraced her in the contentious legal battle. ~snip~

1. They should.
Judy the Mattress must go!

Time for her to move on to her right wing press and publicity tour book deal.

She'll make millions as a right wing media whore.

2. I suspect
they're waiting for the timing (e.g., after the indictments). Even if Miller is not indicted, her shameful role will still be exposed...and that can be used by NYT to be rid of her while "saving face".

3. After the Keller email - it's only a matter of time.
They may feel some obligation to her at this point, but she is in trouble anyway - they may not have to fire her

4. Howard Kurtz- talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
The Post should have fired him a long time ago for conflicts of interest for reporting on Arny's campaign! (among other things).

Pox on both of their houses....

I’m assuming he did this Keller-culpa under duress -- he didn’t really want to but he’s smart and knew he had to.

I’m assuming that his memo “slipped out” on Friday because he knows that on Sunday the paper’s public editor, Barney Calame, is going to write a devastating critique of the Times and he wanted to do some pre-emptive self-flagellation.

I’m assuming that Keller has not yet accepted that Judy Miller is only one part of the Times’ problem -- that he must also confront an institutional arrogance that extends beyond one rogue reporter.

I’m assuming that Judy Miller has written her last story for the New York Times.

Keller's dancing on the head of a pin here. I honestly think he was really hoodwiked by Miller and just finally got hit by the 16 tons of reality...and trying to find a way to do this without getting his paper and reputation in worse shape. He also stands between a growing open revolt among his own staff and a publisher who still hasn't come clean about his errors in supporting Miller...or in making any comment whatsoever. Why is "pinch" so silent?

What's gotta really hurt is the big scoops this week...the naming of two possible turned witnesses came from the rival Daily News...and could have been fed to them by some disgruntled NYT staffers.

Supposedly there's to be a real critical article in tomorrow's NYT...let's see if this is just some ass covering in the wake of more embarassing days for the "paper of record".

7. I thought I heard she had gone on indefinite leave?
But so much has happened this week it may have been a misunderstandment on my part.

8. They're putting off their 3rd mea culpa in as many years
They'll have to do it sooner or later, may as well get it over with. They've been through bad stretches before, but it's unbelievable how idiotic they've been during the Bush administration.

9. Maybe 'bringing down the Times' was part of the plan.
Was Judy a plant that could eventually undermine the Times as well as promote the war in Iraq? That's what they call a two-fer.

10. They made it too easy then
They coulda, shoulda, woulda reined her in if they had any sense. They're still handling her with kid gloves, which is boggling.

11. Firing Miller would lead to charges
of "liberal bias" by gassy right-wing pundits. Despite the fact she should be shown the door for being a stooge for Chalabi, et al, I think her days at the Times are numbered.

She's being handled carefully since she was already annointed a martyr by Times' management.

She's an apparatchik. Good riddance.
