If we win next year, let's start a liberal patriotism police |
|
The only way to make the Right realize that their view of patriotism is ridiculous and un-American is for us to mock it and emulate it when our people are in power. So here is what I propose. No matter who becomes president, Clark, Kerry, Dean, Kucinich, I don't care, we immediately begin attacking the patriotism and Americanism of anybody who criticizes the new president. Criticism from the Left will be kind of conveniently ignored. Anyway, we should attach the new president to nationalistic symbols and slogans like flags and anthems, so as to suggest that support for the current president's policies are tanamount to support for the country. We should make bumper stickers that say: "GOD BLESS PRESIDENT KUCINICH and our troops" and hold up signs at demonstrations that say "THANK GOD JOHN KERRY IS PRESIDENT". We should write letters to the editor in newspapers attacking the patriotism of anyone who attacks the president's policies: "If the writer hates President Clark so much, and hates America so much why doesn't he just go back to his cave in Afghanistan?" At a certain point the Right will start to make the arguments we have been making about patriotism and the right to dissent, at which point we should say, "Oh. Had enough?"

my skin would crawl to even think of saying stuff like that. I get your point though. But I bet most of us can even entertain such thoughts in our heads.

I despise people who do such garbage as wage a flag in my face. People wave flags because they don't have any substance whatsoever. Hell, why do you think that Machiavelli said to Dante in a debate that Dante's speech was not conducive to Florentines.

an "don't blame me I voted for Bush" sticker would deserve the death penalty. It would never work....hmmm....then again....

4. Democrats don't do that - do they? |
|
I understand what you are saying, I really do. They have been making it really hard for "us" to have a dialog with "them". In fact, they have been telling us they don't want a dialog. But it is not "us" vs. "them".
Democracy is not that. In promoting democracy, we promote full discussion of all issues from all sides, and we really don't want to be like "them" anyway. We, the people, have bigger fish to fry. In other words, we have tons of important issues that need addressed, issues that have been ignored not only by Republican politicians, but also by our (Democrat) politicians - all politicians bought and paid for by the corporate powers and not answerable to the people. By winning the election, we can give the people a voice in matters again. By rejecting corporate lobbyists and listening to the people, democrats can force our corporate media to start covering real issues that matter to most Americans.

5. It's very tempting. I bet it would go like the clappers, honestly |
|
It would certainly give all the 'get a brain morans' guys a real frisson of fear about suddenly being on the wrong side.
I bet it would take off like The Wave. Really. It might bear thinking about, and for broadly the same reason as The Wave was a very worthwhile exercise.
