CBS Evening News Sunday Reported on soldiers refusing return Iraq
Tonight they led off with the attacks in Iraq that cost 2 lives. 2nd story was about soldiers on leave refusing to return to Iraq and going AWOL. So far only 8 they said of 2000. Had one soldier who is not going back in shadow - National Guard - saying how many times he's come close to being killed by bombs and of buddies hurt and killed and he's refusing to return. Veteran's advocate also interviewed saying he's getting a lot of inquiries on the legal issue of choosing not to return.

1. here it comes... as in Vietnam, when even the soldiers are dissenting...
...there are problems.

while I'm hugely sympathetic to the soldiers who are there, I am thankful that a message is being sent that the price that we are paying in Iraq is possibly too great.

don't ask me, I don't give a damn
Next stop is IraqNam.

Never thought I live to see Vietnam redux. Unfolding in slow motion.

Same hubris, same idiots who think they can control the entire world, and remake it in their vaunted image, same greedy corporate whores, same innocent young soldiers lied to and thrown into the breach of chemicals, bombs, mayhem, gore, blood and death.

Same arrogant pricks on TV talking about how we "can't pull out", "gone too far" "can't leave because the lives lost would have been in vain" "light at the end of the tunnel" "things are better than reported", blah blah blah blah blah.

3. Okay. Will this FINALLY make an issue of Dubya's AWOL history?
Or will the media whores be instructed to not mention him at all?? GWB can't say a word about this -- he doesn't dare!

6. MLawson
I never once thought of that side of the coin.

I'm dying to hear what Chimpy has to say about these AWOL soldiers.

9. They are encouraging the soldier to take their leave
in Germany - that way it would be harder to go AWOL. Military prefers they not come to the States.

The more I hear from the soldiers themselves. I would love a reporter to ask these guys what they now think of the "support our troops" crowd - where are they now??? Those fake patriots had the gall to accuse US (the peace movement) of being against the soldiers.

ARRRGGGHHH, my blood pressure....

8. Can they claim...
that out of admiration for our great "leader" president, they have decided to go AWOL?

10. I really feel bad for these people
The military will throw the book at them and the media won't say a word about our wartime deserter in chief. Sad situation.

11. If they use some JAG weinie for defense they are doomed.
Edited on Sun Oct-19-03 06:13 PM by fknobbit
A civilian Lawyer would kill the issue so fast you would not believe it. Watch how quite it gets when one of these guys hire one. A Civ Lawyer can bring up embarrassing crap that a JAG lawyer can't unless he has a death wish.

While I would support any action to get the troops out of Iraq and I don't want to offend anyone - I really wonder how a soldier can justify going AWOL because of getting shot at - that is expected in war isn't it? or have even the soldiers themselves been convinced that war is fought safely from the air with high tech munitions. Getting shot is kinda part of the bargain isn't it?

13. They Can't
It's like civil disobedience - if you are prepared to face the penalty, go for it.

What is important about this story is that it demonstrates the shallowness of the war's popularity and reason.

14. Agreed. But what MAY become important about this story is how
Whistle Ass and Weasel Ass respond to it and how the American people respond to that. My guess is that these troops will be attacked by the administration or its proxies.

15. Why can't they use * AWOL as a defense?
* didn't have to report for duty during the Vietnam War why should I? There should be some "liberal" attorney out there willing to use that defense to make a name for themselves. I say go for it.

16. Well, my Prez did it
why can't I? Isn't that the repuke mantra about Clinton. Oral Sex is rampant in high schools now because Bill Clinton did it. Hey, what goes around comes around.

CNN was threatened by the WH with a visit from the SEC when they started talking about the shrub being AWOL. That was a no no and still is, I'm sure. If they talk about the soldiers going AWOL, they would have to talk about the shrub being AWOL,...no can do, boo boo!

I know the Democrats would make the shrubs AWOL a HUGE story....this should be interesting. Can't wait to hear how the repukes spin it.
