Film Shows Nancy Reagan "A Pill-Popping Control Addict"
Drudge has his panties in a wad :bounce:

<snip>

In the upcoming CBS telefilm on President Ronald Reagan producer fail to mention the economic recovery or the creation of wealth during his administration, nor does it show him delivering the nation from the malaise of the Jimmy Carter years.

The film depicts Nancy Reagan as a pill-popping control addict, who set the president's schedule based on her astrologer's advice and who had significant influence over White House personnel and policy decisions.

MORE

The NEW YORK TIMES has obtained a final script for THE REAGANS, according to newsroom sources.

TIMES reporter Jim Rutenberg does it again, and is planning a Tuesday splash.

"This was very important for me, to document everything and give a very fair point of view," says Leslie Moonves, the CBS chairman and a top Democrat supporter .

MORE

The film is set to air during next month's Sweeps. It stresses Reagan's moments of forgetfulness, his supposed opinions on AIDS and gays, his laissez-faire handling of his staff members. The scenes often carry a disapproving tone.

1. Hmmm
They failed to mention the economic recovery to the rest of us as well. I never heard a thing about it, nor did I experience it in my personal finances at the time.

26. I like if CBS Nov two-part miniseries "Reagan" tells Truth -upsets Drudge
Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 09:19 AM by papau
This is old news that was out last Spring - now they are trying stop CBS from airing it!

http://talk.cabletvinfo.com/talk/showthread.php?t=233

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - After watching CBS's proposed Ronald and Nancy Reagan two-part miniseries, viewers will be able to ask themselves an important question: Are they better off now than they were four hours ago?

CBS plans to base the miniseries on Carl Sferrazza Anthony's book "First Ladies: The Saga of the Presidents' Wives and Their Power, 1961-1990," with a concentration on the former actor's years with wife Nancy.

Tentatively titled "The Reagans," the miniseries will start in the 1940s when Reagan was a working contract actor in Hollywood. The biopic will follow his rise from Screen Actors Guild president to California governor to 40th President of the United States.<snip>

:-) Drudge then spins the above by saying folks involved are Democrats and do not use the GOP/US Media approach to Reagan od telling lies about his career - of course that is my interpretation of what Drudge said........ :-)

CONTROVERSY SWIRLS AROUND CBS REAGAN FILM; SCRIPT REVEALED
Mon Oct 20 2003 20:30:29 ET

In the upcoming CBS telefilm on President Ronald Reagan producer fail to mention the economic recovery or the creation of wealth during his administration, nor does it show him delivering the nation from the malaise of the Jimmy Carter years. (MY COMMENT - PERHAPS BECAUSE ECON GROWTH WAS SAME PER YEAR AS CARTER'S - 3.33% versus 3.25% for Carter, and WEALTH WENT TO ALREADY WEALTHY)

The film depicts Nancy Reagan as a pill-popping control addict, who set the president's schedule based on her astrologer's advice and who had significant influence over White House personnel and policy decisions.

"This was very important for me, to document everything and give a very fair point of view," says Leslie Moonves ....The film is set to air during next month's Sweeps. It stresses Reagan's moments of forgetfulness, his supposed opinions on AIDS and gays, his laissez-faire handling of his staff members. The scenes often carry a disapproving tone.During a scene in which his wife pleads with him to help people battling AIDS, Reagan says resolutely, "They that live in sin shall die in sin" and refuses to discuss the issue further.<snip>

The film's producers, Zadan and Meron,...tells the TIMES: "This is not a vendetta, this is not revenge. It is about telling a good story in our honest sort of way. We all believe it's a story that should be told."

Matcom - I did not see your posted and posted the above at

28. he really trashed the economy, what a mess
Only the very upper crust did well during most of the Reagan years, which had a strong focus on union busting.

2. No offense or anything
I don't like the tone of this even though Regan did some controversial things. I don't think he deserves the right to be framed in that perspective. It is just shock television and only stuff worthy for the tabloids.

If anything, this is just going to piss off Conservatives and say that liberals are doing character assasinations.

5. "controversial things'?
- Jesus...you must not have been around during the Reagan years. He was the prelude to Bush* and the beginning of the dumbing down of America.

- Not to mention that his administration committed criminal and treasonous acts against the US and funded/supported terrorism.

8. Actually
I wasn't around. I started Kindergarten in 1989. I am just raising a point that the Conservatives will just say it's a bunch of Hollywood Liberals that are trying to skew "their hero". The L.A. Times was accused of gutter politics when they published that Ahhnold article. I really think that a lot of people changed their votes because they didn't like all the negative press.

I'm just saying that this could stall someone of the progress that Democrats have been making, that's all. The conservatives will try to associate the new books coming out that have substance and integrity with this tabloid riddled production and undermine the moderate's faith in the left. Although the allegations are probably true, I don't think many Americans would like it. That's all I am saying.

6. I don't know if you are old enough to remember those
"Reagan Years"...but Reagan spent a lot of time maligning the poor, underprivileged and anyone he could think of that conservatives didn't like. To this day people are fighting the stereotypes that twit set in motion....for example...the famed woman on welfare with a big cadillac...

He started this hate mongering but he was throwing stones from a glass house.

When he was president he was under constant fire but it would all deflect and fall to the floor...hence the nickname the Teflon President.

I recall Nancy's immensely expensive china at the taxpayer's expense, her astrology fascination, her dislike for certain members of his staff and the feuds that ensued. The fact that he was senile while president...he recalled fighting in battles he was never in???

All of this was/is known....so this docu-drama may help people take a more grounded position when Reagan is finally laid to rest.

4. After Two Plus Years of Dubya, I Forgive Nancy Reagan
After over two and a half years being ruled over by George Deucey-U Bush and the right wing of the Republican Party, I am coming to forgive Nancy Reagan and am blessing her for not taking the country off the edge into the abyss like the current pResident.

One major difference from the start between Ronald Reagan and Dubya--Reagan was elected fair and square.

32. Reagan was not elected fair and square
One major difference from the start between Ronald Reagan and Dubya--Reagan was elected fair and square.

Reagan was not elected "fair and square". unless you think it was "fair and square" to steal the opponent's debate prep book prior to a debate. unless you think it was "fair and square" to send emissaries to negotiate with terrorists holding Americans hostage, offering the terrorists incentives to not release their hostages until after the election. thus undermining the efforts of the sitting president to free them.

those were dirty tricks, and treason in the latter case.

7. Economic recovery??
The only place I've heard that parroted but never ever proved is by Sean Hannity. His massive tax cuts for the wealthy might have improved their lives dramatically but Reagan kicked the legs out from under working class people.

Lets see...By 1983,two years into the Reagan fiasco we were teetering on the edge of losing a house we bought in 1981,my parents loaned us a couple of thousand to get us by. In 1985 my dad was forced to retire from PPG Industries several years before he wanted to because of massive cutbacks and closing of all retail stores. In 1987 my brother-in law lost his job at Cessna where he had worked since 1977. He went over to LearJet and worked for awhile and got laid off, over to Boeing and then laid off...etc. I worked in the new house industry back then and could name 10-15 builders who went belly up under Reagan's "tinkle down" policy's. The rich got one hell of alot richer, the Industrial Military Complex made out like fucking bandits at taxpayer expense and us worker class people got the shaft for 8 solid years. Screw ya Ronnie....

it HAS been an economic recovery — that is if you are RICH!

On a related note, they have organized a campaign to get CBS to not show this:

19. These are not exactly new allegations
People have been saying that Nancy "Just Say No" Reagan had a pill problem for years. The astrologer rumors have been around for a while, too.
I think the fact that Reagan got shot caused people to rally around him as president. He was good in front of the camera, at least in the first term, before the alzheimers was obvious, and we all saw the attempt to kill him on tv. I never liked him, and think that his administration was far more corrupt that Nixon's, but Bush makes him look like a saintly deep thinker in comparison.

Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 08:58 AM by ProfessorGAC
There was no economic recovery, Matt, you idiot! The entire change in real GDP was funded with borrowed money. That's not a recovery, it's a financial shell game.

It is not a true recovery (although conservative economists use the most convenient definitions) if the actions of gov't take more than 3 years before a shift to a fully sustainable fiscal policy are required. The Reagan fiscal policies were maintained for more than 10 years. There was no point during the 80's in which the economic growth was sustainable without increases in borrowing. That's not a recovery of the economy. It's just an arbitrary improvement in the numbers.

Matty boy can call that a recovery if he wishes, but that would make him wrong.
The Professor

29. Robin Leach said that - refers to 1935-37 "hostess" career to finance folk
but to be fair - while the "hostess" ladies were thought of as whores - no one can prove that everyone doing the job was a whore - and only Robin Leach has said that Nancy was all that great at blow-jobs.

But I do wonder if Nancy and Monica will ever compare notes?
