I guess the example above is why I'm such an absolutist on gun rights and free speech. We effectively live in a police state now. If you believe that our own law enforcement officers will not follow orders and use lethal force to quell legitimate dissent you are mistaken. With Dubya's "if you ain't with me, yer with Osama" mentality catching on, there are many in all levels of law enforcement who've had their existing "us vs. them" culture encoraged and amplified. I believe we are going to see more incidents replicated and barely reported.

this is scary!!
This is the very reason people should join up with fellow citizens fighting for the repeal of the USA Patriot Act.

Get involved before the option is taken away from you and we live in a police state.

5. One of the more frightening statements... |

from a cop, "We're just following orders". Where have we heard that before?
It was not accepted as an excuse at Nuremburg, and it will not be acceptable as an excuse here. Every citizen, whether civilian, police, military, gov't; has not only the right, but also the obligation to question dubious "orders". If we allow ourselve to blindly follow authority, we will wind up no better than those states that are despised by the RW, Totalitarian regimes without a voice.
The problem is, people are not brave enough, nor educated enough to question authority. I noticed in the article, that each time a question was asked, the police backed down a bit. This shoiws me that even they questioned what the Chief was ordering. Ramsey should be fired, and those that were overzealous in prosecuting the arrests, should be sent to the netherworld of walking police beats far away from contact with people.

Another similar account, but of Seattle, is Paul Hawken's, if you haven't read it. (Hawken founded Erehwon Natural Foods and then Smith & Hawken tools. He's a millionaire, leftist, pro-environment entrepreneur and economic theorist. A very, very smart man.) http://www.thomhartmann.com/hawken.shtml

BTW, An ACLU lawyer told me that it was becoming standard procedure to allot money ahead of time for law suits, so preemptive arrests and violations of civil rights could proceed as planned.
